The Orb and the Couch Potato: Tom’s Quest for Change

Part 3 : The Lost City of Laziness

By Enoch of MediocrecityPublished 2 years ago 2 min read

Tom’s encounter with the orb had become something of a regular occurrence, though he hadn’t yet taken it up on any of its offers. He had grown accustomed to its visits, even if he didn’t fully understand why it kept coming back. It was on a particularly warm afternoon, as Tom lay sprawled on the couch with a fan pointed directly at his face, that the orb made its next appearance.

The familiar hum filled the air, and the orb’s light glowed bright, casting long shadows in the dimly lit room. Tom barely reacted, his eyes half-closed as the orb floated before him.

"Tom," the orb began, its voice carrying a note of urgency, "today I offer you the chance to discover the lost city of Atlantis. Imagine the wonders beneath the waves, the secrets of a civilization long gone. You could be the one to uncover the truth about Atlantis, to walk its streets and explore its mysteries."

Tom cracked one eye open, the word "Atlantis" catching his interest. "Atlantis, huh? That sounds... wet. Do we have to go underwater?"

"Yes, Tom," the orb confirmed, its glow intensifying. "But think of the adventure! The ancient ruins, the treasures, the knowledge lost to time. This is a chance to make history!"

Tom considered it for a moment, his mind conjuring images of ancient temples and glittering gold. But then he thought about the logistics—swimming, the cold water, the potential dangers. The thought alone made him tired.

"Swimming’s really not my thing," Tom said, shaking his head. "And I’m not a fan of cold water. Plus, what if we run into some sea monsters or something? I’ve seen movies; it never ends well."

The orb dimmed slightly, but its enthusiasm remained. "Tom, this is Atlantis. The lost city, a place of myth and legend. The discovery of a lifetime!"

"Yeah, but I don’t even have a swimsuit that fits right now," Tom countered, settling deeper into the couch. "Maybe another time, when I’m more prepared."

The orb flickered, the light growing faint as it processed Tom’s decision. "Very well, Tom. But know that opportunities like this are rare. You may not have another chance."

With that, the orb faded away, leaving Tom in the quiet of his apartment once more. He sighed, turning over on the couch, already drifting into a nap. Atlantis could wait, he told himself. It wasn’t going anywhere.
