The Orb and the Couch Potato: Tom’s Quest for Change

Part 1 : The Lazy Morning of Time

By Enoch of MediocrecityPublished 2 years ago 3 min read

Tom Winston had always been a man of simple pleasures. He enjoyed a leisurely morning, a quiet afternoon, and an evening spent with a good TV show. The day he got laid off from his job at the tech company was no different. Instead of worrying about his future, he saw it as an opportunity to indulge in his favorite pastime: doing nothing.

That morning, he woke up late, as usual. Sunlight filtered through the blinds, casting a soft, golden hue over his messy apartment. The remnants of last night's dinner—pizza crusts and a half-empty can of soda—were still on the coffee table. Tom groggily reached for the remote, ready to flip through channels until something mildly entertaining caught his attention.

But as he settled into his worn-out couch, something unusual happened. A soft humming filled the room, growing louder until it was impossible to ignore. Tom glanced around, searching for the source of the noise, but saw nothing out of the ordinary. Just as he was about to dismiss it as his imagination, a sudden burst of light appeared in front of him.

Startled, Tom jumped back, almost spilling the bag of chips he had just opened. The light coalesced into a glowing orb, hovering a few feet above the coffee table. It pulsed gently, as if it had a heartbeat, and radiated a warm, inviting glow.

"Tom Winston," the orb spoke, its voice smooth and resonant, "I have come to offer you an extraordinary opportunity."

Tom blinked, rubbing his eyes to make sure he wasn't still dreaming. "An opportunity?" he repeated, skeptical. "What kind of opportunity?"

"A chance to witness the greatest moments in history," the orb replied, its light brightening with excitement. "To travel through time and experience events that have shaped the world as we know it. Imagine standing in ancient Rome, watching the Colosseum being built! Or journeying to the Renaissance and meeting Leonardo da Vinci as he paints the Mona Lisa."

Tom scratched his head, still not entirely convinced that this was real. "Time travel? That's... a lot to take in. And why me? I’m just a regular guy."

"Because, Tom," the orb explained patiently, "you have the potential to do great things, to see and experience the wonders of the past and bring that knowledge into the present. All you have to do is say yes."

Tom leaned back, considering the offer. Ancient Rome did sound fascinating, and the idea of seeing the Colosseum in its prime was tempting. But then he thought about the logistics. Time travel probably meant a lot of walking, dealing with crowds, and who knows what kind of historical hazards.

"I don't know," Tom said slowly. "It sounds like a lot of work. And I’m pretty comfortable here. Besides, Rome’s got to be hot, right? And I’m not really dressed for that kind of thing."

The orb dimmed slightly, as if sighing. "Tom, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Think of the stories you could tell, the things you could learn."

"Yeah, but... I mean, it’s morning. I haven’t even finished my coffee yet," Tom reasoned, lifting his mug to emphasize his point. "Maybe tomorrow? Or later this week? I could pencil you in."

The orb hovered in silence for a moment, as if processing Tom's response. "Very well, Tom," it finally said, its glow returning to normal. "I will wait for you to be ready. But remember, time waits for no one."

With that, the orb faded away, leaving Tom alone in his living room. He stared at the spot where the orb had been, feeling a pang of something that might have been regret. But it was fleeting, quickly replaced by the comfort of his usual routine. Tom shrugged, grabbed the remote, and turned on the TV. Ancient Rome could wait.
