The Notification That Wouldn’t Die

A harmless little ping became the beginning of something I could no longer escape.

At first, I thought it was nothing.

Just a notification.

A tiny sound from my phone while I was making coffee.

Ping.

I looked at the screen.

“You have a new notification.”

I unlocked the phone.

Nothing.

No message.

No email.

No missed call.

Nothing.

I shrugged and put the phone down.

Ping.

Again.

I checked.

Nothing.

“Fine,” I whispered. “Whatever.”

I turned the phone face down.

Ping.

This time I didn't touch it.

I was determined not to let a stupid piece of technology control my morning.

I made my coffee.

I opened my laptop.

I stared at the blank document where I had promised myself I would finally write something.

Then—

Ping.

I looked at the phone.

The screen was dark.

I picked it up.

There was a notification.

“We need to talk.”

I frowned.

There was no sender.

I opened it.

The notification disappeared.

I checked my messages.

Nothing.

I checked email.

Nothing.

Social media.

Nothing.

I laughed nervously.

“Great. My phone is haunted.”

Then another notification appeared.

“You shouldn't have ignored me.”

I stopped laughing.

I switched the phone off.

For a few seconds, the room was completely silent.

Then my laptop made a sound.

Ping.

I slowly turned toward it.

A notification appeared in the corner of the screen.

“That won't help.”

I stared at the words.

My laptop wasn't connected to my phone.

I knew that.

I had turned everything off.

I pulled the internet cable from the wall anyway.

The notification remained.

Then another appeared.

“You're making this difficult.”

I closed the laptop.

My heart was beating faster now.

I told myself there was an explanation.

There had to be.

A software error.

A virus.

Some stupid prank.

Anything was better than the alternative.

I went into the kitchen.

I poured myself another coffee.

My hands were shaking.

The phone rang.

I didn't answer.

It stopped.

Then it rang again.

I ignored it.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Finally, I picked it up.

The screen showed:

UNKNOWN CALLER

I answered.

“Hello?”

Silence.

“Who is this?”

Nothing.

Then I heard my own voice.

“Who is this?”

I froze.

The voice on the other end repeated everything I had just said.

Not like an echo.

Like someone was sitting in the room with me, recording my words and playing them back.

I hung up.

A notification appeared.

“Don't hang up.”

I threw the phone onto the sofa.

I wanted to leave the house.

I grabbed my keys.

The moment I opened the front door, my phone buzzed again.

“Where are you going?”

I looked around.

The street was empty.

I stepped outside.

Another notification.

“You forgot something.”

I checked my pockets.

Wallet.

Keys.

Nothing else.

Then I heard something inside the house.

A chair scraping across the floor.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

I stood frozen in the doorway.

The phone buzzed.

“Come back inside.”

“No.”

I said it aloud.

Another notification appeared.

“Please.”

That frightened me more than the others.

Because it sounded human.

I stepped back into the house.

The chair was now sitting in the middle of the living room.

I hadn't left it there.

I was certain.

My phone buzzed again.

“Sit down.”

I didn't.

“Sit down.”

I still didn't.

Then the television switched itself on.

The screen showed my living room.

But the camera angle was wrong.

It was looking at me from the corner of the ceiling.

I stared at the screen.

Then I looked toward the ceiling.

There was nothing there.

The television displayed another message.

“You always ignore the important things.”

My phone buzzed.

My laptop chimed.

The television flickered.

Every screen in the house displayed the same sentence:

“NOW YOU HAVE MY ATTENTION.”

I screamed.

Then everything went black.

No lights.

No television.

No laptop.

No phone.

Silence.

I waited.

Nothing happened.

Slowly, I reached for the phone.

The screen turned on.

One final notification appeared.

I read it.

And this time, there was no strange message.

No threat.

No mysterious voice.

Just four words:

“Thank you for listening.”

I stared at the screen.

Then another notification appeared.

“Tomorrow, we start again.”

I dropped the phone.

And from somewhere inside the dark house—

Ping.

I didn't sleep that night.

I didn't sleep the next night either.

But every morning at exactly 8:00, the same notification appears.

I have tried changing my number.

I have bought a new phone.

I have moved houses.

Nothing works.

The notification always finds me.

And yesterday, something changed.

For the first time, the message wasn't addressed to me.

It said:

“Your neighbor is ignoring me.”

I looked through the window.

Across the street, my neighbor was drinking coffee.

His phone suddenly buzzed.

He looked down.

Then he looked directly at my window.

He smiled.

And my phone displayed one final message:

“He's listening now.”
