The Neighbor’s Dog Stopped Barking at Me
Serial-Killer Noir
The neighbor’s dog used to bark every time I walked past the fence.
Then one morning, it didn’t.
I stopped by the gate and waited.
Nothing.
It sat under the porch steps with its chin on its paws, watching me with the dull patience of something that had finally learned good manners.
I appreciated that.
The next house had two terriers. They normally threw themselves against the chain-link like tiny unpaid security contractors.
That afternoon, they only watched.
By Thursday, the shepherd on the corner had stopped too.
Then the husky.
Then the old beagle behind the pharmacy.
The street became very quiet.
People noticed.
Mrs. Vale started walking faster when she saw me. Mr. Henley stopped letting his spaniel into the front yard. Someone posted in the neighborhood group asking whether there had been “some kind of sickness going around.”
I almost replied.
It seemed impolite to interfere.
By the following week, nobody walked their dogs anymore.
The houses still had leashes hanging beside their doors.
Water bowls sat on porches.
A tennis ball remained in the gutter outside number fourteen.
No one mentioned the barking.
That was the strange part.
People will tolerate almost anything once discussing it becomes more uncomfortable than pretending it never happened.
Yesterday, the neighbor finally caught me standing beside his fence.
He looked at the empty patch beneath the porch steps.
Then at me.
“Have you seen Baxter?”
I considered the question carefully.
“Not lately.”
He nodded.
We stood there for a moment, listening to the neighborhood.
Perfect silence.
I smiled.
It had taken eleven houses, but eventually they all learned.
