The first time I collapsed after the crushing hit on the gridiron, and the accompanying disgusted look from my father, I’ve never forgotten. Similarly, I’ve never forgotten the moment I finally shut my loud mouth and actually listened.
In that moment, she was sitting on the bed, angrily saying what needed to be said, holding no punches. It hurt, just like that look from my father. But unlike his look, her words changed me, saving me from a worthless future; one where I simply pulled up the heels on the same pair of torn work boots as my underwhelming father.
