Present Day
She stood in the open doorway with her mouth hanging open as she watched the Polaris Slingshot pull up in front of her garage. She had been working on restoring a '74 Stingray all afternoon and she was covered in grease. Grabbing a rag to clean her hands she went out to get a better look at the beautiful machine.
“Holy cow would you look at that baby!” she exclaimed. As she circled the vehicle and started firing questions about horsepower and torque at the owner. She froze as she heard the familiar chuckle; spinning to face him she saw the familiar face appear as he took off his helmet “Cole.” She said in a whisper.
It had been almost 9 years since she had seen him last and she had sworn she would never forgive him for breaking her heart. She never did leave town, instead, she had studied hard in school and opened her own garage. She had made a name for herself, specializing in restoring vintage sports cars. And she was proud of her hard work.
She was shaken. He looked exactly the same, and yet different. Gone were the boyish features she remembered, replaced with an edginess she hadn't known. She wondered at the things that he'd seen and what would put that hard glint in his eye. Shaking herself she put a cocky grin on her face. "Well, well. If it isn't the prodigal son returneth." Throwing the rag towards her workbench she looked back at the Slingshot. "Isn't that a sexy beast!?" Trying to keep her cool she resorted to shop-talk. At least there she knew where she stood. "Tell me about your new toy, How fast have you taken her? What modifications have you had done?" She turned to look at him with a dreamy smile on her face. “I bet she handles like a dream! What's the drift like?" He just stared at her for a minute before returning her grin and tossing her the keys. "Why don't you take her out? We can talk once you get back."
Ripping the ponytail from her hair, she put the helmet on and climbed down into the driver's seat. "Watch the shop for me will ya? I'll be back in half an hour!" She revved the engine, enjoying the growl of the motor as the RPMs climbed. With a shout, she popped the clutch and launched the vehicle onto the road. As she drove towards the edge of the city, her mind spun with questions. What was he doing there? Why had he come back after all this time? How did he expect her to react to him just showing up after nine years with no word? Soon enough though the sheer joy of driving through the countryside at high speed cleared her mind of all those thoughts and she was able to just relax and appreciate the way the car handled. She raced through the hills outside of town taking the turns a little faster than was safe and enjoying the way the single tire in the back controlled the curve. She felt alive and totally in control. THIS is why she liked powerful cars. She was completely in her element when she sat behind the wheel. Unlike that first moment when she saw Cole standing in her driveway.
Gearing down, she let the car slow to a more sedate pace as she pondered the possible implications of the return of her first, and only, love. Ahead there was a lookout area and she pulled the car over, checking her phone's reception she quickly dialed Maxine. "I can't believe that you didn't tell me your brother was coming into town!" She exclaimed as soon as she heard her best friend's voice. "What the hell, Maxine? I thought we were friends! Don't you think that I deserve at least a heads-up?" She didn't even hear her friend's response as she continued ranting into the phone, pacing up and down the narrow shoulder of the road as she did. Finally, she began to get herself back under control and as she took a deep breath to apologize, Maxine interrupted: "Are you done now? Did you get it out of your system so we can talk about it like adults now?"
Marcie took a deep breath and tried to reign in her temper, she knew that she often had problems with it, and now was no exception. She muttered under her breath as she paced along the side of the road. Finally, she took a deep breath and spoke slowly. "Maxine. Why didn't you tell me that Cole was coming home? How long is he here for? Why did he come to my shop? And WHERE did he get this fabulous vehicle?"
"Marcie, why don't you go back and ask him those questions? The only thing I will say is that he's my brother, and he asked me not to tell you. He didn't want you to get pre-distressed. I think you should give him the chance to talk to you. Just hear him out. You might be surprised."
Marcie chewed on her thumbnail, a habit that she had thought she broke years ago, while she considered what her friend had said. Finally, she sighed. "Max, is he okay? He's not in trouble, is he? Is he home for good, or just passing through? -" "Marce. Go. Ask him your questions." She interrupted "It's about time for you guys to face your feelings. Maybe you can both get some closure and move on. At least that's what I was hoping."
The two friends chatted a bit more before hanging up again. Marcie, walked around the Slingshot admiring the sleek design and the way the dash computer interface looked. She climbed back into the vehicle and checked to make sure that all lights were green. She grinned as she gunned the engine and flipped the visor closed on her helmet. With a shout of delight, she launched back onto the roadway heading towards home. And Cole...
