The Little Things
Live slowly in this fast world.
A young man slouches atop a hill overlooking his city and sighs: “My life is moving too fast, and I am afraid.”
“Then slow down.” chirps the robin, “and feel the breeze on your skin.”
The man sat up.
“Feel the warmth of the sun caressing your hair.” whispers the wind.
He sweeps his hair from his eyes.
“Observe all life, great and small.” imparts the beetle.
His focus falls upon a single petal in the soil.
They harmonise: “this is all you get, don’t rush to the finish.”
The young man stands up and smiles.

The Golden Valley
The difference between light and dark could be as quick and simple as a flip of a switch, the drawing of a curtain, the opening of one’s eyes. It could be more gradual like the slow adjustment of the diaphragm on a microscope, the turn of a planet on its axis, the growing light as you approach the end of a tunnel. A flicker in the dark, a steady glow in the distance, a flash in the night sky.

Maya’s heart hammered a frantic rhythm against her ribs. Sixty seconds. That’s all she had. She peeked through the grimy bus window, the pre-dawn Sumenep sky bruised with the promise of a violent sunrise. The conductor’s booming voice, a rhythmic singsong in Javanese, faded as the bus lurched to a stop. Sixty seconds to rewrite her destiny.
