Creams like Aciclovir can be used as soon as you feel that first tingle, and they can help shorten how long it lasts. Keeping the area clean, avoiding touching it too much, and not sharing things like cups or towels while it is active can stop it spreading to others or to other parts of your own skin. Some people also use soothing creams or lip balms to stop the skin from cracking.

As for how long it lasts, most cold sores follow the same path. They appear, blister, then dry out and form a crust. From start to finish, it usually takes around seven to ten days, sometimes a little longer if you are tired or unwell. After that, it fades, and the skin settles back to normal, as if nothing had happened.

But the truth is, it is still there, just hidden again. Waiting quietly, like it always does.
