The Last Train Home

The Train

By Henry StevensPublished 2 years ago • 1 min read

The station was nearly empty, save for a lone figure sitting on a bench—Nathan. He checked his watch. 11:58 PM. The last train home would arrive in two minutes.

A soft rustling made him look up. Across the platform, a woman in a long red coat stood beneath a flickering lamp. Her face was obscured by shadows, but something about her seemed… familiar.

The train’s whistle echoed in the distance. Nathan turned back to his watch. 11:59 PM.

When he looked up again, the woman was standing right in front of him.

“You always take the last train,” she said softly.

Nathan’s blood ran cold. Her voice—he knew it. But it was impossible.

“Emily?” he whispered.

The woman smiled sadly. Emily had died five years ago. He had been at her funeral, had seen the casket lower into the ground.

The train’s headlights cut through the fog as it pulled into the station. The doors slid open with a soft hiss.

Emily reached out her hand. “It’s time, Nathan.”

A cold chill wrapped around him. He looked at the train, then back at her.

He hesitated… then took her hand.

The doors closed. The train rolled away.

And the station was empty once more.
