There was an enthusiasm in the way Carolena hung up the phone on her father. The days of tea parties and blind forgiveness were over. The urgency of the click was filled with a vigor that anyone with parent wounds could have identified as the last straw. Carolena could no longer handle the canyon of deceit that lay gaping between them. In her mind, this conversation would be their last. This conversation, with its egotistical defensiveness and empty apologies, left Carolena clear that if anything was going to change in their relationship, it would have to begin with her.
