The Last Message

A Time Traveler’s Plea from 2099

By MuhammadPublished about a year ago • 3 min read

Dr. Eliza Carter wasn’t supposed to check the quantum relay that day. It was a routine diagnostic—just another system check at the Department of Temporal Physics. She’d done it a hundred times before. But that day, the screen flickered.

Lines of corrupted data scrolled across her terminal, too fast to interpret. Then it froze.

A single audio file blinked on the screen:

“LAST_MESSAGE_2099.”

Heart pounding, Eliza hesitated, then pressed play.

A distorted voice crackled through the speakers.

“This is… Eliza Carter… If you hear this… you must stop the Cascade Event. The world—no… time itself—ends. You have… less than 30 days. Please… don’t trust—”

Static swallowed the rest.

Eliza sat frozen. The voice was unmistakably hers. Older. Tired. Desperate. From a future that shouldn’t exist.

Shaking, she combed through the attached data. Encoded fragments emerged—corrupted footage of oceans boiling, cities collapsing, skies torn by storms that defied physics. Climate breakdown. AI riots. Quantum instability. All cascading together. The Cascade Event.

Her eyes widened as she read further:

“Event origin: Project Singularity. Launch Date: October 17, 2045. Lead scientist: Dr. Marcus Vale.”

Vale

Her former partner. Once the love of her life. Now a ghost, working in secret for the Quantum Defense Initiative. His public work focused on renewable quantum energy, but she now saw the truth: he was developing temporal weapons. Time bombs, quite literally.

And in less than 30 days, one of his experiments would unravel reality.

Nobody Believes Time Travelers

Eliza did what any rational scientist would: she reported it.

She took the message to the Temporal Oversight Bureau. They laughed it off as a prank. Her colleagues ran diagnostics, declared it a corrupted simulation file. The AI flagged her behavior as erratic.

But then… it began.

Minor anomalies first: her lab equipment began reporting timestamps from the 2200s. Files vanished. Reappeared. The building’s floor plan flickered on her tablet. Strangers walked past her who didn’t exist seconds later.

And in the mirror—she saw herself, older. Worn. Haunted.

The past and future were bleeding together.

he Betrayal

Digging deeper, Eliza traced the origin of the message. What she found shattered her.

The transmission wasn’t meant for her.

It had been encoded with Vale’s personal quantum signature—his security clearance embedded in the metadata. She had only intercepted it because her console was still linked to his prototype.

Which meant…

The future Eliza didn’t trust her past self.

She trusted him.

Why?

Had she failed before? Had she tried—and lost? Was this the final attempt?

The betrayal was deeper than professional. Vale had once stood beside her, preaching ethics and caution. Now, he was recklessly twisting quantum theory into a weapon capable of collapsing time itself.

He wasn’t just a threat. He was the beginning of the end.

A Choice Against Time

With government agencies watching her, the anomalies growing worse, and reality unraveling, Eliza knew she had no one left to rely on. Not even herself.

Sleep became fractured. Time bled into dreams. Her own memories began to slip—moments disappearing from her mind like water through a sieve.

But one thought remained clear:

This can’t happen again.

So she made a final, desperate choice.

Racing against flickering timelines, she returned to her lab, bypassed the firewall, and initiated a relay pulse. She recorded her own message—knowing she might never survive long enough to hear it echoed back.

“This is Eliza Carter. If you hear this… you still have time. Stop the Cascade. It starts with Vale’s experiment. Destroy the prototype. No matter the cost.”

The relay powered up. The lab trembled. Lights flickered. Time folded inward. She felt herself split—like being in two places at once.

Reality shattered—then blinked out.

A Whisper Across Time

Somewhere in the not-so-distant future, a young scientist monitoring background radiation notices something strange.

A foreign signal.

Encrypted. Fragmented. Containing one name they recognize:

Dr. Eliza Carter.

And a single directive:

Stop the Cascade.

The air around them hums. A chill runs down their spine.

The question echoes across centuries—

Will they listen in time?
