The Last Goodbye

Unnervingly calm

The air in the room was unnervingly calm, calmer than it had any right to be. Outside, the wind moved soft and steady through the open window beside the bed, stirring the curtains gently, as if nothing at all had changed. As if nothing was wrong. But everything was terribly, irreversibly wrong.

When they let me step inside, there he lay. Still. Lifeless. I pulled the chair close beside him, sank down, and lifted his hand to mine, holding it for the very last time. This was it. This was goodbye.

“God, Rudy…” I whispered, resting my forehead against his. How? I thought. Why now? Why right after we’d gotten engaged? Why right after we signed the papers on our first house? Why right after I hung our photos on the walls? Just when we finally had our happy ending, it had to end like this. It always, always ends in heartbreak.

The tears came faster than I could wipe them away. And truthfully, I didn’t want to stop them. I wanted to feel his hand squeeze back, the way it always did. I wanted to see that familiar warmth in his smile. I wanted to hear his voice, light and happy, calling my name. I wanted him to open his eyes. But I knew he wouldn’t. I knew the moment I walked out this door, I would never see him again. My vision blurred until his face, the face I loved more than anything was nothing more than a shape I would carry in my heart forever.

Even the flowers on his bedside table seemed to have dimmed. Their colours were still bright, but somehow softer, as if even they understood that brightness no longer belonged here. I squeezed his hand once more, hoping foolishly, desperately to feel him squeeze back. Nothing came. I leaned forward until our foreheads touched. My heart hammered. My face burned. My eyes overflowed. And then, gently, our lips met. One last time.

I kissed my dying love. My dead love. It was goodbye. It was a promise. It was a quiet thank you for every moment, every laugh, every beautiful thing you brought into my life. I will remember you. I will hold onto the happiness you gave me. Goodbye, my love. Goodbye to everything we were.

I brushed my fingers one last time against his cheek, then stood. At the doorway, I turned back. I looked at him pale, still, his chest rising and falling no more. I memorised every line, every quiet detail, even though it broke me. I hated seeing him this way. And yet, I wanted to stay here forever. But time does not stop. Not even for this.

I walked out of the room. Out of the building. I moved like something hollow a body going through motions, because there was nothing left to pull me forward. I walked home not because I was returning to someone, but because there was nowhere else to go. Not because Rudy would be there waiting, arms open, wrapping me in that warm, steady hug that always made everything feel okay.

I sank onto the couch and stared at the walls. At our photos. They seemed to stare back, bright, smiling, full of all the beautiful moments we had lived. They were taunting me. Reminding me of everything I had just lost. Maybe they weren’t mocking me. Maybe they were trying to comfort me, whispering remember this, remember the joy. But I didn’t want to remember the joy. I wanted to live it. I wanted to be with him. And I had just let him go.

I sat there for hours until the light faded completely. Eventually I stood and walked to the kitchen in the house that was meant to be ours, but would now only ever be mine. The woman cooking dinner was not really me. It was just the shell of someone who had lost the reason her world turned. He had been the sun my whole life orbited around. And now that he was gone… my world had stopped turning entirely. And it was breaking, piece by piece.
