The dragon stood on the cliff side, his head held high as he stared up at the crescent moon. Starlight reflected off his cobalt scales, and his sharpened onyx nails dug deep into the snow. Behind him, the Infinity Cave burrowed into the mountain, with treasures unknown to man and beast hidden inside.

A breeze wafted from the forest below. It brought with it a scent that made the dragon’s eyes widen: human.

One…two…three…four that he could smell.

The dragon held his head high and waited, watching and listening for the first sign of their attack. His slit-pupil eyes grazed the forest below for any movement, but none came. Nothing but the sounds of the night reached him. His hot breath mixed with the cold air, causing puffs of white wispy clouds to exhale from his mouth.

Then a twig snapped in the distance.

As the dragon’s head twisted in that direction, an arrow whizzed through the air and hit him in the eye. The dragon roared in pain. Another arrow came at him, and he swatted it out of the air with ease. Another arrow raced through the air, and another. The dragon continued to bat down the offending weapons, unable to see the two humans climbing up the cliff side behind him.

Confident that their comrades could distract the dragon, the two thieves heaved themselves up onto the cliff side and rushed toward the cave. One slipped on the snow, letting out a small exclamation of surprise as he did so.

The dragon whipped around at the human’s cry and charged towards the thieves. Arrows continued to barrage him but bounced harmlessly off his armor-like scales. One pierced his vulnerable wingsail, but he did not care; he had to stop the humans from getting to the cave.

He was too late.

The humans fell over each other, stumbling into the darkness of the Infinity Cave—

The dragon stood on the cliff side, his head held high as he stared up at the crescent moon…

It's more like the dragon's protecting people from entering and falling to their own demise forever than he is trying to stop them from attaining the cave's treasures.
