The Green Light

A SciFi Fable…

Since the extraterrestrials arrived nothing was the same. Things weren’t better or worse merely… Different! The oddest change was a bright green light that seemed to appear daily in the wee hours of the morning. With all the other changes that was the least of anyone’s concerns.

Most illnesses had been cured and aging so greatly slowed and even reversed the population was only still dealing with overpopulation based world hunger which was now the only remaining concern. The initial thrill of those scientific advances was muted by world hunger and an underlying hostility was beginning to brew amongst the people towards the extraterrestrials even after their many contributions in the form of technological advancements. “Why save us only to starve?” many screamed at them and the skies where their huge spacecrafts dwarfed the Earth’s largest buildings on the skyline.

Many noticed their health had greatly improved yet didn’t attribute it directly to the extraterrestrials. Everything was in such upheaval as most had to restructure their entire belief systems and were in a state of shock as they dealt with the changes. Everything seemed just so different. Life and maybe even death would never be the same again… What was occurring was beyond anything most people could imagine.

“Why are they REALLY here?!?”… “Can they be trusted?!?”… “Are they staying or leaving?!?”… many asked suspiciously about the extraterrestrials. Some people (particularly world leaders) had even been allowed to tour a spaceship and assured the populace that everything they saw gave them no need for alarm. All wars on the planet had ceased as Earth collectively braced itself for whatever was to come next in a unique show of international solidarity never before seen. The green light still shining once a day in the wee hours of the morning with barely any mention or notice.

Some days the green light was brighter than others. Sometimes the hue changed while other times it remained the same color. At times the light was on briefly for just a flash yet other times it lasted for over an hour with a pulsating rhythm. Regardless, EVERY night the light was there.

Although there were no signs of hostility on the part of the extraterrestrials certain governments and factions of private industry like the crumbling medical establishment were becoming threatened by the changes and began to stage “a revolution”. They began to champion an attack on the extraterrestrials even considering the use of nuclear and their other most advanced weaponry against them. Unfortunately, many were quick to to agree. As relations began to become strained between Earth and it’s newest visitors the green light was seen for shorter periods of time and eventually stopped completely.

Then one day as suddenly as their spaceships had arrived they left. The peaceful extraterrestrials had heard of an impending attack and left! Along with them many of their contributions seemed to suddenly just fade away with them and things weren’t “as different” any longer. The spaceships had caused a few broadcasting issues so worldwide communications were somewhat restricted. As the ships left many all over the world began to compare notes and they found one common trait to the strange visitation… The green light!

Finally, after the extraterrestrials left Earth it received what was to be it’s last communication from the visitors. Translation of the extraterrestrials’ language and the vast inferiority of humanity’s intelligence compared to theirs had made that extremely difficult throughout the entire experience. It was to be the most Earth shattering and heartbreaking revelation ever…

The nations hardest hit by starvation suddenly were growing a new nutrient rich food source! The issue of world hunger had seemingly been solved TOO! Many had tried it already in developing nations and were proclaiming it to be delicious and some said their physical ailments had decreased or even disappeared after consuming it. However, the final broadcast immediately ended any hope and joy.

“Goodbye! We tried to help but we were met with danger/hostility. We are sorry we were unable to complete our project due to safety reasons. Without the green light everything will return to the way it was. Underevolved compared to other planets/species.”
