The Gloam: A World on the Edge

Only fire could halt its march. But as other strongholds before the City discovered, no fire on earth could burn forever. The Gloam was relentless, intractable, and, as far as the multitudes driven to the furthest corners of the world were concerned, eternal.

The Gloam was not a thing that could be reasoned with. It did not negotiate. It did not pause. It simply advanced, a slow-moving tide of shadow and silence that swallowed everything in its path. The world had been shrinking for generations, its boundaries pushed back by an enemy that could not be defeated, only delayed. And now, the City stood as the last bastion of light, a fragile beacon in a sea of encroaching darkness.

The Weight of Memory

The elders spoke of a time before the Gloam, a time when the world was vast, and the horizon stretched beyond imagining. They told stories of cities that touched the sky, of oceans that sparkled under the sun, of forests so dense that the light barely reached the forest floor. But those stories had become myths, whispered to children who would never know a world that was not shrinking.

The City was all that remained. Its walls were high, and its fires burned bright, a defiant flame against the creeping shadows. But the flame was always burning, always consuming. And the people knew, deep in their bones, that no fire could burn forever.

The March of the Gloam

The Gloam moved like a tide, silent and inexorable. It did not rush. It did not rage. It simply advanced, a slow-moving wall of darkness that consumed everything it touched. Forests withered. Rivers dried. The land itself seemed to sigh and surrender, giving way to the weight of the shadows.

Those who had fled before it spoke of a presence, a weight that pressed down on the soul. They spoke of whispers in the dark, of shapes that moved just beyond the edge of vision. They spoke of the cold, a chill that seeped into the bones and refused to leave.

And they spoke of the silence. The Gloam was not loud. It did not roar or howl. It simply... existed. A quiet, patient darkness that waited for the flames to die.

The Fire That Could Not Burn Forever

The City's fires were its greatest weapon and its greatest burden. They burned day and night, a constant defense against the encroaching shadows. But the fires required fuel, and the fuel was running low. The forests that once surrounded the City had been consumed, their wood turned to ash. The mines that once provided coal had been abandoned, swallowed by the Gloam.

The engineers worked tirelessly, seeking new sources of fuel, new ways to sustain the flames. But every solution was temporary, a patch on a wound that would not heal. The fire was dying, and with it, the hope of the City.

The Last Stronghold

The City was not the first to fall. Before it, there had been others strongholds that had stood for generations, their walls high and their fires bright. One by one, they had fallen, their flames extinguished by the relentless advance of the Gloam. The survivors had fled, carrying nothing but their memories and their fear.

Now, the City stood alone. Its walls were the last defense, its fires the last light. And the people knew, in the quiet corners of their hearts, that the end was coming. The Gloam was patient. It had time. It had always had time.

The Flicker of Hope

But even in the face of the inevitable, there was a flicker of hope. A whisper of a possibility that had been dismissed as myth, as legend, as the desperate dream of a dying world. They spoke of a place beyond the Gloam, a place where the sun still shone and the shadows could not reach. They spoke of a way through, a path that had been hidden for generations.

The City's scholars had dismissed it as folklore, the superstition of a people too afraid to face the truth. But as the fires burned lower and the shadows crept closer, the whispers grew louder. And the people began to wonder: what if the stories were true?

The Gathering Storm

The Gloam was relentless, intractable, and eternal. But so was the spirit of those who refused to surrender. The people of the City gathered in the great square, their faces lit by the flickering flames. They spoke of the path, of the journey that lay ahead. They spoke of the hope that had been buried for so long.

And as the fires burned low, they made their choice. They would not wait for the end. They would not surrender to the shadows. They would march into the unknown, carrying their flames with them, a defiant spark against the endless dark.

The Gloam was patient. It had time. But the people of the City had something the shadows could not extinguish: hope. And hope, as they had learned, could burn forever.
