The Fire
From the Ashes of Danger and Darkness, a Family’s Light Returned
Fire has marked their story in more ways than one. It has appeared as wildfire sweeping across the hills, as sudden flame engulfing a vehicle on the road, and as a quiet, internal blaze that nearly faded to nothing only to burn brighter than before. This is the story of how the Foxx family faced fire in every form, and walked through it together.
The First Flame: On the Road
Long before the wedding bells rang, there was a fire on a quiet stretch of road near their home. On the morning of January 18, 2016, a vehicle sped off the highway, careened into a drainage ditch, rolled over several times, and burst into flames. Jamie Foxx heard the crash and he did not wait. With smoke billowing and metal heating up fast, he and an off-duty EMT rushed to the wreckage, pried the door open, cut the seatbelt, and pulled the driver to safety just before the flames consumed what remained. Corinne, then in her early twenties, watched her father run toward danger when others would have run away. In that moment, she saw something deeper than courage she saw what it means to not let someone burn alone.
The Wildfire That Came to Their Hills
Two years later, in November 2018, the Woolsey Fire roared through Southern California, consuming everything in its path. The flames came to Thousand Oaks to the very neighbourhood where their home stood. Ash fell like snow; the sky turned an apocalyptic orange; evacuation orders arrived with terrifying urgency. The family packed what they could and fled, watching from a distance as the fire line advanced toward the house they loved. “We had to evacuate, so my kids and my family are in hotels but they’re safe,” Jamie told Entertainment Tonight. “People are losing their whole existence. We were fortunate enough to be able to move but a lot of people aren’t”. For days, they waited uncertain whether the home, the memories, the photographs, the quiet sanctuary would still be there. When they were finally allowed to return, the house stood but the air smelled of smoke, and the landscape around them had been forever changed. Some of their neighbours lost everything. The fire had come close close enough to touch their lives, close enough to remind them that nothing is guaranteed.
The Fire Within: The Longest Night
But the greatest fire they faced was not outside it was inside. In April 2023, Jamie collapsed. A massive medical emergency later revealed as a stroke and related complications left him fighting for breath, fighting for life, fighting to stay with the people he loved. The doctors told Corinne the truth: her father was in grave danger. For twenty days, the man who had run toward burning cars, who had stood tall through every storm, lay still in a hospital bed. The fire of his life flickered low. Corinne stepped into the gap. She stayed by his side through every shift, every test, every uncertain hour. She managed the silence, guarded his peace, and held the space for him to heal. Later, the doctor would say it plainly: “Your daughter saved your life”.
When Jamie began to recover, it was slow. There were days when progress seemed impossible. There were moments when the fire felt as though it might go out. But Corinne was there steady, unyielding, refusing to let him fade. “I didn’t realise how much she had stepped up,” Jamie would say later. “She handled it like Michael Corleone stepping in to protect his father”.
The Wedding: Walking Through Fire to Light
On September 21, 2024, the family gathered at that same Thousand Oaks home the one that had stood through wildfire threats, the one that had held so many moments for Corinne’s wedding to Joe Hooten. Jamie walked her down the aisle. To the world, it was a father giving away his daughter. To them, it was a miracle. “I was fighting for my life just a year ago,” he told those close to him. The tears he shed were not just happy tears they were the tears of someone who had looked into the fire and come back.
When Corinne and Joe danced, when Jamie sang the song he had written for his daughter, when the cake was cut and the night filled with laughter it was not just a celebration of love. It was a victory over every fire that had ever tried to consume them. The flames outside had come and gone. The flame within had nearly died and then, nurtured by love, it had grown stronger.
What the Fire Taught Them
They know now more deeply than most that fire destroys, but it also reveals. It shows you who will run toward the smoke. It shows you what truly matters. It shows you that even when everything burns away, the love remains.
Corinne and Joe began their marriage in a house that had been threatened by fire, in the embrace of a father who had been to the edge and back. Their anniversary is not just a date on a calendar it is proof that you can walk through fire and emerge whole. That what is built with love does not burn away easily. That the brightest flames are not the ones that roar but the ones that endure.
The fire came. It did not take them. And in the place where darkness might have settled, they built something beautiful instead.
