The Final Countdown

A Microfiction Story

They say innocent men don’t land on death row. But it happens, and I am next up to be fried.

If I had just been able to convince my girlfriend not to leave me for that loser Danny Betts, she’d be alive today and I wouldn’t have been convicted of her murder. I’ve spent 20 years trying to figure it out but I just can't.

Last meal delivered but I can’t eat it. Time is running out. I can hear footsteps coming down the hall.

The guard opens my cell.

“It’s time Danny, let’s go.”
