Pain seared my body as my eyes snapped open. An inferno blazed beneath my skin, threatening to pour from each pore. My vision blurred with tears of burning anguish. What have they done to me?
I forced my eyes to close briefly before commanding my vision to clear. Silence suffocated me as the tiny wooden box around me seemed to shrink. Slamming my palms on the panel above me, I kicked as hard as I could. Four holes tore through the thick wood.
For a moment, I paused. Surely this wood should have broken my hands before I broke it. Yet my fingertips wiggled easily in the cold, wet mud encasing my coffin, entirely unharmed and unbroken.
I shuddered. Did they bury me alive; or did they believe I was dead? Yanking my hands and feet free from the wooden tomb, an avalanche of mud to spill onto me. The once white lab coat covered in thick mud. My name "Cyra" accompanied by the word "Failed" stamped across it in all red.
A scream clawed its way from my tongue to my lips, bursting to life, as a volatile concoction of rage and determination. Flames licked at my face and singed the wood around me. A bitter laugh rattled from my lungs. They. Will. Pay. For. This.
Rage turned to resolve. With one, deep furious breath, I pulled my legs to my chest and pushed with all my might. When I had first applied for the position of lab assistant, I assumed I would be helping conduct tests; not that I would become one. I remember rolling capsules of hazardous material from one room to the next, and then nothing. I burst free from the ground in a fiery blaze.
