The Ember Waltz

The Forbidden Glow

By Anees KaleemPublished 4 months ago 1 min read

The villagers of Oakhaven lived by one rule: never follow the lights in the Whispering Woods. Elara, young and reckless, ignored the warnings. When she saw the golden flickers dancing between the pines, she didn’t see a threat—she saw a mystery.

The Living Lanterns

Stepping off the path, Elara found the lights waiting. As she approached, the golden glow turned to a piercing, hungry crimson. They weren't lanterns. They were hundreds of detached, floating eyes, watching her from the mist.

The Final Echo

She turned to flee, but the forest floor turned to thick, grasping roots. The silence of the woods was shattered by a chilling, rhythmic clicking. Then, a cold breath pressed against her neck, whispering in her grandmother’s voice:

"We have been waiting for a new light."

The forest swallowed her scream, and the woods went dark once more.
