Six months later, the world felt brighter.
Not in the impossible, silver-lit way of the dream world.
Not in the violet skies and whispering fields that still lived only in memory.
This brightness was warmer.
Softer.
Sunlight through open windows.
Laughter over coffee.
Late-night phone calls that lasted until dawn.
Plane tickets.
Road trips.
Shared secrets.
A life.
Lydia smiled as she stepped out of the airport into the golden California sun.
The warmth hit her skin instantly, carrying the scent of salt and distant ocean air.
Palm trees swayed against a sky so blue it almost didn’t look real.
And there he was.
Clay.
Waiting just beyond the curb with that same smile that had once pulled her across worlds.
His dark hair moved in the breeze, sunlight catching along the edges.
The moment his eyes found hers, the rest of the world disappeared.
He was already moving before she could set down her bag.
Then his arms were around her.
Strong.
Warm.
Real.
Lydia laughed as he lifted her slightly off the ground and spun her once.
“You made it.”
His voice still had that same note of disbelief every time he saw her.
As if some part of him still couldn’t believe she was truly here.
She touched his face gently.
“So did you.”
For a moment, they simply looked at each other.
Six months.
Six months of healing.
Of hospital visits.
Of learning each other again in the waking world.
Of piecing together the edges of two lives that should never have found one another.
To everyone else, they had a simple story.
A believable one.
They had met through mutual friends while Clay was recovering in the hospital.
Lydia had been transferred to the same rehabilitation center weeks after waking.
They’d bonded during recovery.
Fell in love slowly.
Naturally.
A story the world could understand.
Only they knew the truth.
Only they knew about the void.
The silver fields.
The Keeper.
The worlds between.
That story belonged only to them.
A sacred thing.
Their beginning.
Clay took her hand and kissed her knuckles softly.
“I have something planned.”
Lydia smiled.
“That sounds dangerous.”
His grin widened.
“Only the best kind.”
The drive along the California coast stole her breath.
Ocean to one side.
Golden cliffs to the other.
The road curved like ribbon beneath the late afternoon sun.
Lydia rolled the window down, letting the sea breeze rush through her hair.
For the first time in what felt like forever, life felt easy.
Peaceful.
Clay reached across the console and intertwined his fingers with hers.
“You okay?”
She looked at him and smiled.
“Better than okay.”
His eyes softened.
“Me too.”
They drove until sunset painted the sky in shades of pink, gold, and lavender.
Then Clay pulled the car onto a quiet overlook above the ocean.
The Pacific stretched endlessly before them, sunlight dissolving into the horizon.
Lydia stepped out and moved toward the edge, the wind lifting her dress softly around her legs.
“It’s beautiful.”
Clay came to stand beside her.
His expression was different now.
More serious.
More tender.
She turned toward him.
“What is it?”
For a moment, he simply looked at her.
The wind moved between them.
The waves crashed far below.
Then Clay reached into his jacket pocket.
Lydia’s breath caught.
He stepped closer.
“Lydia…”
His voice was steady, but she could hear the emotion beneath it.
“I’ve loved you in places that shouldn’t exist.”
Tears instantly filled her eyes.
He smiled softly.
“I loved you in dreams.”
He paused.
“In the space between life and death.”
His eyes never left hers.
“Our love survived silence.”
He took another step closer.
“It survived fear.”
His voice lowered.
“It survived worlds trying to keep us apart.”
By now tears were already slipping down her cheeks.
Clay dropped slowly to one knee.
Her hand flew to her mouth.
He opened the velvet box.
A delicate ring caught the last light of sunset, scattering it into tiny stars.
His voice shook now.
“For a long time, I thought I was only surviving.”
A soft smile.
“Then I found you.”
He swallowed hard.
“You gave me a reason to come back.”
The tears blurred her vision.
Clay’s eyes glistened.
“Our love survived between worlds.”
He took a breath.
“And now I want to spend the rest of my life exploring this one with you.”
His voice broke on the final words.
“Lydia Ashford…”
He looked up at her with tears in his eyes and hope in his smile.
“Will you marry me?”
Lydia let out a laugh through her tears.
A beautiful, broken, joy-filled sound.
“Yes.”
The word came instantly.
“Yes, Clay.”
He rose so quickly she laughed again, crying as he slipped the ring onto her finger.
Then his arms were around her.
Her arms around him.
They kissed beneath the fading California sun, the ocean roaring below them like applause.
When they finally pulled apart, Clay rested his forehead against hers.
“Only you and I know how impossible this is.”
Lydia smiled through tears.
“Then let it stay our secret.”
The sky darkened into stars.
And somewhere far beyond sight, between every world that had once separated them…
love remained.
