The diary of a forgotten soldier
Here’s a brief outline of a story for *"The Diary of a Forgotten Soldier"*:

**The Diary of a Forgotten Soldier**
*February 17, 2025*
The heavy rain pattered against the window of the dimly lit room where I sat, looking out at the gray horizon. The war had ended long ago, but the memories lingered, like shadows that wouldn’t leave. I was just another face in the crowd now, a forgotten soldier who had given everything for a cause that had long since been buried under the weight of time.
The pages of my diary felt like the last connection I had to the person I used to be. The soldier who once stood with pride, the man who thought his sacrifice would be remembered. But here I was, lost in the quiet of my own existence, far from the front lines, far from the comrades who had once called me brother.

The sound of gunfire still rings in my ears, even though I haven’t heard a shot fired in years. I often dream of those days, the days of battle and brotherhood, when life seemed so much simpler, even though it was filled with fear and chaos. We fought side by side, shared laughter amidst the bloodshed, and in the rare moments of peace, we spoke of home. Of families, of love, of the future that might await us after the war. But for many of us, that future never came.
My unit was wiped out in a flash. One moment, we were advancing, and the next, it was all gone. In the blink of an eye, everything changed. The blast hit so close that it left me deaf for days, my body a mass of bruises and broken bones. Yet, I survived.

I’ve returned home. But it’s not the same. People look at me like I’m a ghost. They don’t know what it was like over there. They don’t know what I’ve seen, what I’ve lost. How could they? They go on with their lives, unbothered by the horrors that have become my reality. I try to tell them, but the words never come out right. What can I say? That I’m empty inside? That the war never really ends, not for those of us who lived through it?
I’ve started to forget faces. I don’t know if it’s the trauma or the passage of time, but the memories blur. I remember their laughter, their voices, but their names... I struggle to recall them. The men I called my brothers. And that’s the hardest part, isn’t it? To be forgotten. To give so much of yourself, only for the world to move on without you.

I found an old picture of the unit the other day. I stared at it for hours, unable to recognize most of the faces. Was that really me standing there, smiling like I had a future ahead of me? I almost didn’t know who the men beside me were. It feels like a lifetime ago, like someone else’s story. And maybe it is. Maybe the soldier I used to be no longer exists.
I’ve been to the memorial a few times now. It’s strange, standing there, reading the names of the men who died, knowing their sacrifice is immortalized in stone, while mine is lost in the quiet of forgotten corners. It’s not their fault. They were heroes. But I wonder: what about the ones who lived? The ones who came home, but never truly returned?
There are no parades for us. No monuments for the ones who are still breathing, still walking among the living, haunted by what we left behind. We carry it in our bones, in our hearts. In our minds. But nobody remembers.
So, I write. I write so that, someday, someone might find this diary and know who I was. And who we were. The soldiers who didn’t just fight for a country, but for each other. The ones who are forgotten, but never truly gone.
*January 15, 2025*
I’m closing the diary now. Maybe it’s time for me to be forgotten too. Perhaps it’s better that way. After all, who remembers a soldier whose name is no longer spoken?
But for now, I’ll write. For those of us who remain.

This piece could be expanded and adapted depending on the tone you want, but it captures the feeling of a soldier who has been forgotten by the world, and the loneliness and haunting of war. What do you think? Would you like to adjust or add something to the story?
