I must admit, everything started quite innocently. The sun was casting gentle rays through the dusty windows of the old library, and I was just there to borrow a book. Simple, right? But then again, why would you believe me? The librarian, a stern woman with spectacles perched precariously on her nose, glared at me as if I were up to no good. I swear, I hadn't done anything—yet. I mean, I never do, but people always assume otherwise. It’s the way I shuffle, I think. Or maybe the way my eyes dart around the room, taking in every little detail. Anyway, I had my eye on a particularly ancient tome that seemed to call my name. It was on the top shelf, far out of reach for someone of my stature. I glanced around innocently—though some might say “suspiciously”—and noticed a ladder conveniently left unattended. Perfect. Now, some people will tell you they saw me wobbling up the ladder like a drunken sailor, but that's hardly fair. The ladder was rickety, and the floorboards creaked ominously underfoot. I reached for the book, and that’s when things got interesting—or, as the librarian later declared, “catastrophic.” There was a crash. Maybe more than one. I’m not entirely sure. Books scattered, and I found myself unceremoniously sprawled on the floor, surrounded by a sea of literature. But here’s the curious part: the book I was reaching for was gone. Vanished into thin air! You might think I had something to do with it, but honestly, I was just as surprised. The librarian accused me of stealing, of all things! Me! I pleaded my innocence, but she was adamant. Claimed she saw me slip it under my jacket, which is preposterous. My jacket doesn’t even have pockets. So here I am, banished from the library, the missing book a mystery for the ages. Some say the book never existed, that it was just a figment of my imagination. Others whisper that maybe, just maybe, I know more than I’m letting on. But that’s for you to decide, isn’t it?
