As they entered the grand courtyard, Annora's heart pounded in her chest. Her eyes darted around, searching for any sign of escape, but the fortress was impenetrable, its walls rising high above her head like a fortress of stone and iron. She knew she was trapped.
Inside the castle, the corridors echoed with hushed whispers and the soft shuffle of feet. Annora's mind raced as she passed ornate tapestries and gilded portraits depicting scenes of grandeur and opulence. It seemed inconceivable that such beauty could exist within these cold, unyielding walls.
Finally, they arrived at the throne room where King Alaric sat upon his majestic seat, adorned in regal attire that shimmered like liquid gold. His piercing gaze met Annora's tear-filled eyes, his expression a mixture of curiosity and sternness.
"My lord," the soldier announced as he pushed Annora forward, "I have found this young woman outside past curfew."
The king studied Annora intently, his eyes scanning her disheveled appearance and tear-stained cheeks. "And what is your name, girl?" he asked with an air of authority.
Gasping for breath between sobs, Annora managed to stammer out her name. "Annora, Your Majesty."
A flicker of sympathy passed across the king's face as he observed her distress. "Annora," he repeated softly. "You know the consequences of breaking curfew. The law is clear."
Annora's heart sank, her hopes of leniency shattered in an instant. She fell to her knees, her voice trembling as she pleaded for mercy. "Please, Your Majesty," she implored, her voice barely above a whisper. "I never meant any harm. I only seek to provide for my family. Spare me from punishment."
King Alaric paused, his gaze shifting from Annora to his queen, seated gracefully beside him. It was then that Annora noticed the queen's eyes, filled with compassion and understanding. A silent exchange passed between them, and the king made his decision.
"Very well," King Alaric said, his tone resolute yet tinged with a hint of compromise. "I shall grant you mercy, but not without consequence. For your transgression, you shall spend one week tending to the needs of my son, Prince Gabriel. You will be his servant."
Annora's eyes widened in surprise, gratitude mingling with uncertainty. She understood the gravity of this punishment but saw it as a way to redeem herself and prove her worth.
"Thank you, Your Majesty," she whispered through tear-stained lips.
With a wave of his hand, King Alaric dismissed the soldier and motioned for Annora to rise. As she followed the guards towards the chambers that would lead to the prince.
Annora couldn't help but feel a mix of trepidation and anticipation. She had heard stories about the prince's cold demeanor and disdain for commoners, but she was also aware of his undeniable handsomeness, which had earned him the titles of both the kingdom's heartbreaker and the ladies' despair.
The corridor leading to Prince Gabriel's chambers was adorned with intricate tapestries depicting scenes from grand battles and legendary heroes. The air itself seemed to hold a sense of reverence as they approached the prince's door. The guards halted in front of it, their faces stoic and their presence intimidating.
One of the guards knocked on the door with a firm rap, and after a brief pause, it swung open. Annora's breath hitched as she laid eyes on Prince Gabriel for the first time. He stood tall and imposing, his jet-black hair perfectly styled, accentuating his chiseled features. His piercing blue eyes betrayed not a hint of warmth or kindness.
His voice dripped with disdain as he spoke. "What is this?" he sneered, looking at Annora as if she were nothing more than a lowly insect invading his pristine sanctuary. "I don't recall requiring another servant."
Annora's heart pounded in her chest, but she refused to let his unkindness deter her resolve. With steady determination, she met his gaze head-on. "Serving you is not a privilege, Your Highness," she retorted softly yet firmly. "It is a punishment, one that I accept willingly."
Prince Gabriel arched an eyebrow, clearly taken aback by her audacity. But instead of being impressed by her courage, he scoffed dismissively. "You flatter yourself," he spat out condescendingly. "I have no need for your service or your attempts to gain favor."
Annoyance flickered in Annora's eyes, her voice laced with an unexpected fire. "Your arrogance does you no justice, Prince Gabriel," she retorted, holding her ground. "I am not here to gain your favor or pamper your ego. I am here to fulfill my punishment as decreed by your father, the king."
Prince Gabriel's eyes flashed with anger at her boldness. He opened his mouth to respond, but before any words could leave his lips, a soft voice cut through the tension like a gentle breeze.
"Gabriel," the queen said, her voice carrying a gentle reproach that demanded attention. "Enough of this unkindness. The girl is here to serve her penance, and it is your duty as the prince to accept it graciously."
Prince Gabriel's gaze shifted to his mother, surprise mingling with reluctance in his expression. With a sigh that betrayed his annoyance, he finally relented. "Very well," he muttered under his breath. "She can stay."
Annora felt a mixture of relief and determination wash over her. She knew that her time serving Prince Gabriel would be no easy task, but she was determined to prove him wrong and show him that there was more to her than what met the eye.
