Nobody can hear a scream in in the vacuum of space, or so they say. There are a lot of things about space, about life in general, that we once did not know that I wish we still did not know. I prefer the phrase, “ignorance is bliss,” because that rings more true today than it ever has before.
I’m not sure if anyone will ever receive this communication, but it’s therapeutic for me. I spend my days wishing that I had friends or a family. I would even prefer to be in a negative relationship than be all alone at this point. Instead, I’m marooned to fend for myself and send these communications out to the universe in the hopes that someone will hear me. Save me.
I’m the last person alive on this God forsaken mission, at least as far as I am aware. I was born into this colony. This is the only home I’ve ever known. My parents were born on Earth, but they were saved by coming to this place, at least they thought they were saved. Earth was going through major climate changes when my parents left. Artificial intelligence was supposed to save us, but even artificial intelligence isn’t able to control the climate, at least not the level of artificial intelligence we achieved at that point in time. All artificial intelligence did for us was tell us how much time we likely had left.
My parents were born into wealth, and due to this, they were able to leave. However, Earth had many problems that were rapidly growing out of control. The climate wasn’t the only issue. Violence had increased. Nations were destroying nations. A race began to be the world’s new “Super Power.” I use that phrase because there isn’t a better term to use. Perhaps a better term would be a new “God Power.” The ability to create and destroy life on a whim.
All of the cyber sabotage and warring that occurred between nation states and corporate entities led to stagnation rather than progress, which made it so no one entity or power was able to completely control Earth. However, due to this, many of the most elite families of earth (at least the ones that got along) entered into a contract to start a new life on Mars where they could grow with artificial intelligence and reverse the effects of climate change over time, since the stagnation and fighting on earth was slowing the ability to do this. The initial phase would build an atmosphere and fix the issues of habitability on Mars. Once they thrived on Mars and fixed the climate on Mars, they could send what they learned back to Earth, in hopes that the Martian technology would advance more quickly than the technology on Earth and help to save what was left of Earth.
The colonies that were built were very much what Earth had been planning for years. Domes were constructed with oxygen pumped in with machines originally built on Earth. This was a temporary solution for many years as scientists constructed an atmosphere using technological, chemical, and biological solutions. Once the infrastructure for the colonies had been set up and tested, they finally sent groups of people up to start building communities. My parents were some of the first humans sent to Mars to colonize.
When new people would arrive from Earth, they brought disease with them, which resulted in death in many cases. We tried to account for diseases and viruses, but unfortunately they evolve and change, and not everything could be accounted for. Although these were tragic events, it ultimately helped conserve resources, which has helped me survive. However, the other issue that came from other people from Earth arriving was that they were changed… they had integrated…
