The Clockwork Dragon
Truth, integrity, sacrifice, and the importance of questioning history.

Last time anyone spotted a dragon in Valoria was more than half a millennium ago.
For a while, folks seemed certain of it.
Out in the open, kids heard tales about massive dragons cutting through skies, flames roaring over war zones, yet guarding the realm when enemies approached. Stone figures of those beasts watched over village centers, while faces of them showed up on banners and money.
Stories of them once seemed made up. Few believed such things could be real.
Finn, at seventeen, felt doubt creeping in.
Finn wasn’t like most kids his age - his time belonged to wrenches and broken parts in his dad’s shop. Gears? Springs? Engines? Those meant far more to him than any book ever could. Each machine felt like a riddle sitting right there on the workbench, silent until he figured it out.
That day had been like most - clouds hanging low over the ridges, wind picking at loose stones. Suddenly, a glint caught his eye near a split boulder. Not silver, not iron, but something duller, stranger. He crouched, brushing away grit with slow fingers. The shape did not match any ore he knew. Silence settled heavier after that. His breath fogged in short bursts above the find.
Out of the cracked stone, a huge iron fist pushed upward.
He thought it was part of a broken digger at first. Then again, maybe not.
That was when the shiny patterns caught his eye.
Metal scales.
His heart raced.
With a shovel in one hand, a pickaxe in the other, he worked through the dirt for hours. Just as daylight started to fade, the outline finally became clear.
A dragon.
A towering creature of metal, its body built from old clockwork parts. Gears turn slowly beneath a skin of polished brass. Steel bones hold it together, cold and solid. Each movement clicks like a ticking watch. The head is heavy, shaped by forgotten machines.
Out of nowhere, its wings spread farther than the roof of a home. Tiny moving parts, countless in number, ran across every inch of it. Even after ages buried beneath soil, hardly a mark showed on its surface.
Finn stared in disbelief.
Just ordinary beasts, really, those dragons. Not made up at all.
They had been machines.
A shape like a dragon held his gaze when something caught his eye - a tiny slot tucked under a single scale. There, just below the surface, sat what looked like a miniature opening meant for a key.
Curiosity took over.
A small brass key came out of his tool belt. Into the lock it went, sliding deep.
Click.
The mountain trembled.
Gears began turning.
Out of unseen openings, steam escaped with a sharp sigh.
A pair of bright blue eyes snapped open without warning.
Finn jumped backward.
A low rumble came before the creature raised its gaze. Then silence returned.
Both froze, just staring - seconds stretching like something broken. Stillness held them, a breath caught midair.
The dragon broke the silence next. It opened its mouth after that.
"System reboot complete."
From far off came a sound that rolled through the peaks.
Finn nearly fainted.
Down came the huge head of the beast, slow and heavy.
"Greetings, Engineer."
"I'm not an engineer," Finn stammered.
A slow turn of the neck brought the creature's gaze sideways. Its ear flicked as it studied the sound.
"You awakened me. That qualifies."
Finn couldn't believe what was happening.
"Who are you?"
A glow sparked deep within the creature’s gaze.
"I am Aurum. Guardian Unit Seven."
Hours passed before the real story began to show itself. What came out changed everything without warning. Gold wasn’t just metal here - it carried secrets older than memory. The pieces fit only when seen from a different angle. Truth arrived slow, then all at once.
Long before, steel-scaled beasts once guarded Valoria, forged by skilled hands. When conflict tore through the land, those machines vanished without trace. Over time, what was real became stories told at dusk.
"But why were you buried?" Finn asked.
Soft whirring came from Aurum’s gears.
"I was hidden."
"By who?"
The dragon hesitated.
"By those who feared the truth."
Out of nowhere, a blast shook the valley just as Aurum started to speak.
Soldiers.
Dozens of them.
Folks were talking about the beast before anyone even saw it.
At the front walked Lord Varrick, a noble whose reach within the kingdom few could match.
Surprise lit up his face the moment Aurum came into view.
"Magnificent," he whispered.
Finn felt off right away about how those words came out.
Lord Varrick approached.
"That machine belongs to the kingdom."
Aurum's eyes flashed.
"Incorrect."
Out of nowhere, rifles lifted into the air. A sudden stillness followed before metal met shoulder.
Flying high, Aurum unfolded his massive wings. Then came the rush of wind beneath them.
The ground shook.
Faster than a shadow moves, Finn was already on the dragon’s back.
"Run!"
Fumes burst from Aurum’s engine just as he shot upward, breaking free of the ground. The roar followed only after he’d vanished behind a curtain of mist.
Beneath their feet, the land unfolded - vast, quiet, stitched together by rivers and roads.
Finn let out a laugh even though things were risky.
Up in the air, finally - this moment had never happened before. He felt flight wrap around him like something new.
Finn walked beside Aurum under wide skies, chasing whispers through Valoria. Weeks folded into one another as they moved beyond known paths. Each town offered fragments, not truths. Dust clung to their boots while silence filled the gaps between questions. The horizon never stayed still.
Hidden ruins appeared during their journey - inside were old writings no one had seen before.
Something they found left them stunned. What came next changed everything between them.
Most of those called heroes across Valoria’s past never truly earned the name.
Long before now, rich lords began battling each other just to gain more gold and control. Once the dragons found out what was really happening, they walked away instead of staying in the fight.
Out of anger, the nobles smashed nearly every dragon to pieces. Pages got altered after that, shaping what people would later believe.
Buried was the truth of what really happened.
Just like Aurum.
"If people learn the truth, everything will change," Finn said.
Aurum nodded.
"Truth often does."
Later on, it was Lord Varrick who found their trail. He’d been tracking long enough to close the gap by dusk.
Fog rolled in as his soldiers closed around the capital city.
Folks filled the heart of town, numbers rising by the minute. Not long after dawn broke, voices swelled into a steady hum across the open space.
Finn stayed high on Aurum while Varrick spoke below. From that height, voices blurred into murmurs beneath him.
"That machine spreads lies!" he shouted.
A hush moved through the people, unsure.
Some folks were ready to trust his words. Still, doubts lingered behind their eyes.
History was comfortable.
Truth was not.
Aurum stepped forward.
"I possess the original records."
A hollow click echoed as scales parted like stone doors. Inside, dust swirled around a small space no bigger than a fist. Something old waited beneath ribbed bone. Light caught the edge of a carved box. Air tasted sharp when he breathed it out.
Floating within the chamber, crystal memory cores held lifetimes of records. Each one pulsed faintly, storing what people had seen across ages. Light traced their edges like veins remembering every moment.
Varrick's face darkened.
"If those records are revealed, my family's legacy is destroyed."
A signal broke the silence when he lifted his arm.
"Fire!"
Cannons roared.
Bursts of fire broke out across the open space.
Flying low, a direct blow smashed into Aurum’s wing.
Metal shattered.
The dragon staggered.
Another cannon fired.
Then another.
Finn pushed hard to fix things - still, the harm ran deeper than he could reach.
Aurum felt it deep down.
The dragon looked down at Finn.
"Every machine has a purpose."
"No," Finn said. "We'll fix this."
Aurum smiled.
Five centuries passed without anyone showing a machine how to grin.
"My purpose was never survival."
Finn barely had time to react before Aurum shot upward. The air cracked as he rose, swift and sudden.
Out of breath, he sent each memory locked inside him through the land. Memories once kept now traveled beyond his frame.
Screens lit up.
Crystal projectors activated.
Rumors carried it far. People started seeing things differently.
Every village.
Every city.
Every home.
Folks witnessed true events unfold right before them.
Truth cracked through at last.
Just then, the power in Aurum’s motors cut out.
A thunder cracked the sky when wings tore through smoke. Stone split beneath its weight. The beast lay still.
Out of nowhere, a flash of bright blue lit up overhead. The air seemed to crackle as color exploded across the clouds. Not a sound followed - just that sharp glow hanging in place.
Then silence.
Years later, Valoria became a very different kingdom.
Out of old stone rose new markers, built not for glory but for what stands firm when lies fall apart.
A fresh figure rose where the city’s heart beat strongest.
A ruler never held this title. This belonged elsewhere.
Not of a warrior.
A mechanical dragon was there instead.
Finn, a man who made things, would show up there now and then.
Each time his eyes lifted toward the bronze wings, memory of his friend returned. The shape against the sky pulled thoughts forward without warning. Noticing them changed nothing, yet still he paused. Something about their curve kept a voice alive in silence.
A creature of fire once let go of all it owned just to set honesty loose in the world.
Even after Aurum vanished, his deepest teaching stayed behind.
Legends may inspire people.
Yet reality shifts their shape.
Now here’s a thought: shifting everything might just cost more than you’re ready to give. Yet it could still be what matters most.
