The call I never Answered
I thought I had time ...until time stopped calling me back

It was just a phone call.
At least, that,s what a told myself when I saw her name flash across my screen that evening. I was busy, distracted, and honestly...a little annoyed.
Her name kept ringing.
Ammi.
I stared at it for a few seconds ,then flipped my phone over. “I’ll call her back later,” I muttered. That “later” felt harmless. Normal. Something we all say without thinking. But sometimes, “later” quietly becomes “never”… without asking for permission. That day had been long. Work deadlines, constant messages, people expecting things from me—I felt exhausted. When my phone buzzed again, I didn’t even check it. Another missed call. Another silent excuse. I convinced myself she just wanted to talk about something small. Maybe ask if I had eaten. Maybe remind me to take care of myself the way she always did. Nothing urgent. Nothing important. At least, that’s what I believed. When I finally checked my phone hours later, there were three missed calls from her. And one message. “Beta, call me when you’re free.” Simple. Gentle. Like always. I stared at the message for a moment, then locked my phone again. “I’ll call her after dinner.” But dinner turned into scrolling. Scrolling turned into sleep. And sleep… turned into silence. The next morning, my phone rang again. Not her this time. An unknown number. I almost ignored it. Almost. But something made me pick up. “Hello?” There was a pause. Then a voice I didn’t recognize. “Are you her son?” My heart tightened. “Yes… who is this?” Another pause. The kind that feels heavier than words. “There’s been a situation… your mother…” The world around me slowed down. “…she collapsed last night.” For a second, I couldn’t process it. “What? Is she okay?” I asked quickly. Silence. Then the words I wasn’t ready for. “We tried… but she didn’t make it.” --- Everything went quiet. Not the peaceful kind of quiet. The kind that screams inside your chest. The kind that makes every sound disappear except your own heartbeat. “No…” I whispered. It didn’t feel real. It couldn’t be real. I had just seen her name on my phone. She had just called me. --- My hands started shaking as I opened my call log. There it was. Her name. Three missed calls. Each one now felt heavier than anything I had ever carried. I pressed on her contact. Call. The phone rang. Once. Twice. Three times. But this time… no one answered. --- That’s when it hit me. The call I didn’t answer… was the last one she ever made. --- I sat there, staring at my phone, hoping… wishing… begging for it to ring again with her name. Just one more time. Just one more chance. I didn’t need the perfect words anymore. I didn’t need the right moment. I just needed… that call. --- Memories started flooding in. Her voice asking if I had eaten. Her reminding me to wear something warm. Her random calls just to hear me say, “I’m fine.” Calls I sometimes rushed. Calls I sometimes ignored. Calls I thought would always be there. --- I reached her message again. “Beta, call me when you’re free.” Free. I was free now. Free from work. Free from distractions. Free from everything. Except the one thing that mattered. Time. --- I typed a message. “I’m sorry, Ammi. I should have answered.” I stared at it for a long time. Then I sent it. The message was delivered. But it meant nothing. Because some apologies don’t reach the person… They only echo inside you. --- Days passed, but that moment stayed frozen in my mind. That ringing phone. That choice. That small decision I thought didn’t matter. People say life is made of big moments. But they’re wrong. Life is made of small moments. Small choices. Small delays. And sometimes… those small things change everything. --- If I had answered that call… Maybe I would have heard her voice one last time. Maybe she just wanted to say something simple. Maybe nothing important at all. But now, even her simplest words feel priceless. --- I used to think I had time. Time to call back. Time to fix things. Time to be better. But time doesn’t wait. And it doesn’t repeat moments just because you’re not ready. --- Now, every time my phone rings, I look at it differently. I don’t ignore it the same way. Because I know… One day, a call will come that changes everything. Or worse… One day, a call won’t come at all. --- 📌 Lesson: Never ignore a call from someone who loves you. Because one day... you’ll give anything to answer it again.
