The Cafe's Empty Chair

The small brass bell above the door of the café always rang twice when the wind blew. Every Tuesday afternoon, I sat at my usual table, drank my coffee, and stared at the empty seat near the big window. It was a simple dark wood chair with a small notch carved into the back.

The café was always busy, but no one ever sat in that chair. I watched strangers walk up to the table, pause for a second like something was blocking them, and then pick another spot.

One day, I finally asked the café owner, Julian, about it.

"That chair belonged to a woman who sat there every afternoon waiting for someone," Julian said softly. "She stopped coming eight years ago."

My heart sank. Eight years ago was the exact time I stopped answering my phone, buried myself in my job, and walked away from Clara—the woman I loved—without ever saying a proper goodbye.

That night, I opened an old metal box in my closet. Inside was a letter from Clara that I had received years ago but never had the courage to open. She wrote that she would wait for me at the window table in this exact café with a key to our old harbor locker.

The next afternoon, I walked back into the café, pulled out the wooden chair, and sat down. As I touched the smooth wood, the faint scent of her lavender perfume filled the air. Right on the table sat a small brass key tag marked with the number 14.

I ran down to the old harbor building and unlocked Locker 14. Inside were her paintings and a short note. She had not vanished or passed away. She had simply waited, realized I was too scared to stay, and chosen to move on with her life.

Sitting in that chair wasn't about seeing a ghost. It was about finally facing the sadness and regret I had carried in silence for so long.
