"Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say", thought Ray as she looked out the window. Sometimes she thought about walking to the back of the ship, opening the emergency exit and letting her body float out to nothingness. Let space swallow her and take her. It would be more thrilling than this dreaded life of young woman stuck on this ship with her whole life being controlled by the tall, gangly creatures of the Myst.

As she peeled her face away from the window and saw a glimpse of her own reflection, all she could see was her mother. Ray often wondered what it would be like if her mother was still with her today. Would they be laughing and giggling, holding hands as they skipped down the corridors of the ship? Only to be apprehended by the Myst shortly afterwards for "extreme behavior" she was sure. She couldnt count how many times she had been locked in the chambers anymore for "extreme behavior". Ray almost liked it at this point because it meant being away from the watchful eyes of the Myst.

Ray overheard the voice announce through the speaker that all humans return to the observation area. She felt a turn in her stomach and began to walk down the corridor to the observation area. "Had it really been ten years to the day?" She wondered. Her mind began to drift to that day.

Ray would never forget that morning when everything changed. She woke up in the comfort of her bed, rubbing her sleepy eyes, expecting to run downstairs to see her mother standing in the kitchen making hot cakes. The sun was coming through the curtains and there was a light breeze. The curtains were lightly moving in the wind and she could hear some talking in the distance. She figured her father and older brother Brax were already up feeding the chickens.

She gave one big stretch then threw the covers off and jumped out of bed with an enthusiastic THUD. Ray's mouth began to water as she thought about the hot cakes and made her way downstairs to the kitchen. She could hear the creaking of the old stairs as she made her way down. Something caught her attention and quickly snatched her out of her daydream. The scene she saw turned her whole body cold and this time it wasnt the feelings of the ice-cold floor.

Ray's eyes were wide as she gently lowered her feet onto the floor, hoping she hadn't made enough noise to be noticed. From the bottom of the stairs, the kitchen was to the right, the living room to the left, and directly in front of her was the front door. Her eyes were fixated on their bright blue front door which was cracked open just enough for her to see what was happening. She had teased her mother for painting the blue such a horrid bright blue color. "It's as blue as the sky and no one gets angry at a blue sky," her mother teased back. Ray would just roll her eyes at her and stomp off to disassociate into another form of teenage entertainment.

Ray thought it was interesting that this was the memory she chose to think of while she was watching her mother through a crack in their blue door lay face down on their front porch. She could see figures standing around her but could not see who or what they were as they were taller than the door. They were speaking in another language. Ray couldn't see her mother's face as it was turned away from her and was too far away to see if she was breathing.

Ray decided at the last minute to dodge right as there were more items to use for weapons in the kitchen. She slid across the floor and crouched down so she could hide behind the kitchen island. She prayed none of the "things" had seen her. Were these weird, tall, beings aliens? Why did it have to be like the movie Signs with Mel Gibson? Why couldn't they just make their crop circle signs and peace out? Better yet, what about The Fifth Element with Bruce Willis?

She became brave enough to try and stand up. She only prayed her father and brother were safe as well. When her eyes peered over the edge, Ray was able to get a complete look at the horrifying scene.
