The Blade And The Shadow
Ten Slayers, Ten Great Demons, and a friendship that defied every law
In the world, there were two orders that stood above all others: the Ten Great Demon Slayers, the most powerful warriors born to hunt and protect, and the Ten Great Demons, the most terrible and ancient beings to ever walk the earth. They were sworn enemies by every law of heaven and hell. For centuries, they had fought, their names spoken together only in tales of battle and bloodshed.
And yet one of the Slayers and one of the Demons shared a secret that could unravel the world.
Childhood Among Ruins
Long before either carried their titles, there had been a boy named Kael and a boy named Voryn. They had grown up together in the borderlands a place where the light of the Slayer territories faded into the shadows of the demon realms. Kael was the son of a Slayer, Voryn the son of a demon lord. But as children, they knew nothing of bloodlines or destinies. They only knew each other. They climbed the same cliffs, swam in the same waters, and shared bread beneath the same stars. They had promised once, sitting upon a crumbling stone wall as the sun set red that no matter what they became, they would never truly be enemies.
Then the world found them. Kael was taken away to train. Voryn was called to inherit his father’s place. They did not see each other for many years until the day they stood upon opposite sides of a battlefield, titles upon their lips and weapons in their hands. And yet, when the fighting ended, they had met in secret beneath the moon. They had not drawn their blades. They had only spoken and realised that the bond they had forged as children was stronger than any war, any command, any destiny.
Kael rose to become the Fourth of the Ten Great Slayers. Voryn rose to become the First of the Ten Great Demons. The most feared being in all the shadow realms. And the most dangerous friendship in existence.
The Fortress And The Visitors
When Kael was assigned to reside within the Citadel of the Ten the impenetrable mountain fortress where the Slayers lived, trained, and planned the war he knew things would become difficult. No demon had ever set foot within those walls and left alive. Every corridor was watched. Every room could be entered at any time. Every word was expected to be loyal.
And then came the message: The Ten Great Demons are gathering. Voryn will visit you. At midnight. Three nights from now.
Kael spent the next three days in a state of quiet, careful panic. He cleared nothing from his quarters but he hid every personal letter, every small trinket, every token that could suggest familiarity. He memorised the patrol routes, the shift changes, the blind spots. He rehearsed what he would say. He told himself over and over: Voryn will be in and out. Nothing will happen. No one will know.
Midnight came. The moon was thin and silver. A shadow detached itself from the far wall, flowed silently across the floor, and took shape in the centre of the room. Voryn stood there tall, elegant, horns like polished obsidian, eyes glowing faintly crimson. He wore his usual faint, knowing smile, the same one he had worn as a boy.
“You look tired,” Voryn said, as if he had simply dropped by for tea.
“And you look like you’re trying to get us both killed,” Kael whispered, quickly shutting the heavy door and bolting it. “You cannot be here. If they find you”
“They will try to kill me,” Voryn finished smoothly. “And then they will fail. And then you will be in trouble. I know, Kael. That is why I came unseen.” He walked across the room, trailing one finger along the bookshelf. “It is very… bright in here. Smells like sunlight and discipline. I almost feel like I should be standing straighter.”
Kael suppressed a nervous sound. “Sit. Keep your voice down. The Second Slayer has quarters directly above me. She hears everything. And the Third patrols the corridor every ten minutes.”
Voryn sat upon the edge of Kael’s table, legs crossed, looking entirely too comfortable. “Relax. I have shrouded us in shadow. No sound leaves this room. No eye sees within. We have until dawn. Now tell me how you fare. Truly.”
For a little while, they spoke as they always did of old times, of the lands they had explored, of the quiet parts of themselves they could show no one else. But then Voryn leaned forward, his expression changing.
“Kael… there is something you must know. The Ten are preparing to march. Soon. They intend to strike deep into our lands to finish the war in one great battle. Your leaders believe they can wipe us out entirely.”
Kael went cold. “When?”
“Before the leaves turn red.”
Kael stood silent, his mind racing. “I will find out the exact day. And the route.”
Voryn reached out and for a heartbeat his hand rested upon Kael’s shoulder. “I do not ask this lightly. But if they march into the valleys… they will not return. We have prepared. There are traps, and ancient magic, and things even I cannot fully control. If your people enter those lands… they will die. All of them.”
“Then tell me,” Kael said quietly. “So I can try to stop it.”
Voryn looked at him long and steadily. “And if you cannot stop it? What then? Will you stand with them against me?”
Kael looked at his oldest friend. The most powerful demon alive. The boy who had once shared his last piece of bread. “I do not know,” he said honestly. “But I know I will never raise my blade against yours. And I know you will never raise yours against mine. That is all we have.”
Voryn smiled sadly this time. “That is enough. For now.”
Close Calls And Dangerous Games
It was nearly time for Voryn to leave when a heavy knock struck the door.
“Kael!” The voice of the Third Slayer sharp, impatient, and already suspicious. “Open up. I saw something strange near your window.”
Kael’s heart hammered against his ribs. He looked at Voryn. Voryn was already fading, sinking back into shadow, his form dissolving into darkness that pooled upon the floor.
“Open this door, Fourth Slayer!”
Kael stepped forward, his hand upon the bolt. “Go,” he whispered.
“Watch yourself,” Voryn’s voice breathed soft as smoke from the shadows. “And be careful. Among your own kind… you are the one they will watch most closely.”
Kael pulled back the bolt and swung the door open. The Third Slayer stood there, hand upon the hilt of his sword, eyes scanning the room behind him.
“Who were you speaking to?”
“Myself,” Kael said evenly. “Planning the campaign. It keeps me awake.”
The Third Slayer stepped past him, scanning every corner, every shadow. The room was empty. No door but one. No window but the one he had watched. Nothing but books, maps, and moonlight.
The Third Slayer turned back. He looked long and hard into Kael’s eyes. “You keep strange hours, Slayer. And strange silences. Be careful. Trust no one. Especially not demons.”
“I never do,” Kael said.
The Slayer gave one last, searching look and then departed.
Kael shut the door. He leaned back against it, breathing slowly, and looked toward the darkest corner of the room. The shadow there seemed to shift, just slightly, as if in farewell. And then it was gone.
The Secret That Holds The World
So it continued. Voryn came sometimes always in deepest shadow, always in silence. Kael visited him too, in the border ruins where they had played as children. They passed warnings. They softened blows. They saved each other’s lives in ways no one would ever know.
The Ten Slayers did not know why their plans sometimes failed. The Ten Demons did not know why their enemies sometimes retreated before it was too late. Neither side understood why the war dragged on endless, bloody, and yet never final.
Only two people knew the truth. That the strongest Slayer and the strongest Demon were bound not by hate, but by childhood. That somewhere between light and shadow, there was a friendship older than the war itself. That beneath all the titles, all the powers, all the destiny, there was just Kael and Voryn.
And perhaps, in the end… that was the most dangerous thing of all.
