The Bell That Broke Everything
One Bell. One Blink. One Unstoppable Power.

Chapter 1: The Bell That Broke Everything
The school bell rang like it was trying to split the sky in half. CLANGGG!
I shot up from my seat like a rocket, the plastic chair squealing behind me.
“Yo, Jamal, wait up!” Tyrell called, but I was already halfway down the hallway.
See, I wasn’t running because I was late. I was running because my stomach felt like it was being twisted in a knot by an angry octopus. Something was wrong with me. I didn’t know it yet… but today was the last normal day I’d ever have.
Chapter 2: Blink and You’ll Miss It
I cut through the hallway, weaving past lockers, teachers, and gossiping 8th graders.
Then, I blinked.
And everything changed.
When I opened my eyes… I was outside.
Not just outside — I was across the street, on the roof of the pizza place.
I gasped. “What the—?!”
My heart pounded like a marching band inside my chest. My backpack nearly slid off as I stumbled backward, almost falling off the edge.
Cars honked below. My brain was doing backflips trying to figure out how I got there.
“I teleported,” I whispered.
Chapter 3: The Rules of the Blink
That night, I didn’t sleep. I stayed up testing it. I learned the rules:
I had to picture the place clearly.
I had to blink hard, like squeezing my whole face.
I could only do it every few minutes, or I’d get dizzy like I just rode a rollercoaster 10 times.
By midnight, I had been to my school rooftop, the corner store, the gym, and back home — all without a single step.
I grinned into the bathroom mirror. “I’m not just Jamal anymore. I’m Blink.”
Chapter 4: The Good Life
For a while, life was sweet.
I never missed the bus — I blinked to school.
I aced gym class — blinked across the finish line.
Bullies? Gone. I'd blink away like a shadow in the wind.
One time, Mr. Stephenson caught me teleporting and dropped his coffee. I just said,
"Teleportation? Nah, I’m just built different."
I started saving time, helping people, even sneaking into abandoned buildings to explore.
I felt like the hero in a Marvel movie.
But every superhero has a downfall.
Chapter 5: The Girl, the Glitch, and the Government
Her name was Aaliyah. Smart, kind, curls like waves of night sky.
She was the first person I ever told.
We sat on the swings near Cummings Ave at night, under a streetlight that flickered like it was winking at us.
"Jamal," she said softly, “you gotta be careful. People don’t like what they don’t understand.”
But I didn’t listen. I blinked to the top of a building to impress her.
What I didn’t know? Someone was watching.
A black SUV rolled past. Tinted windows. No plates.
Chapter 6: The Disappearance
Two days later, my mom was gone.
She was supposed to be home after her shift at the clinic. Instead, the door was wide open.
No note. No message. Just a single slip of paper on the kitchen table.
“If you want her back, stop blinking.”
The words stabbed me like a knife made of ice.
Chapter 7: Into the Lion’s Den
I didn’t stop blinking.
I blinked into police stations, government buildings, offices with more cameras than lightbulbs.
I found a lab — deep underground, guarded like Fort Knox.
Inside: cages. Not for animals.
For people like me.
There were others — kids. A girl who could move shadows. A boy who could hear thoughts.
And in the center cell: my mom.
Chapter 8: Blink Fight
They tried to catch me. But I blinked faster than ever before — popping around the room like a glitching video game character.
Smoke bombs, nets, tranquilizers — I dodged them all. My rage was like wildfire.
I teleported guards into locked closets.
I blinked into security rooms and fried their computers.
A man in a lab coat yelled, “He’s too unstable! He’ll tear space if he keeps jumping like that!”
Good.
I blinked into my mom’s cell and wrapped my arms around her.
“Time to go,” I whispered.
Chapter 9: A Door to Anywhere
But as we escaped… something felt off.
The world bent around me like it was made of rubber. Trees melted into buildings. Time slowed.
I had blinked too much, too fast. My power was breaking space.
I dropped to my knees. “Aaliyah was right…”
Then I remembered: she said people don’t like what they don’t understand — but that doesn’t mean I had to stop being me.
I took a deep breath, held my mom’s hand, and pictured our living room.
I blinked one last time.
Chapter 10: A New Normal
We made it.
The world didn’t collapse. But I couldn’t blink for weeks. I think I burnt out my power.
The lab disappeared after that — like it was never real. But I knew it was.
So did Aaliyah. So did the other powered kids.
And me? I went back to 8th grade. Quiet. Normal.
But every now and then… when I close my eyes and focus hard enough…
I still blink.
