The gas station was no busier than usual. Mostly just travelers these days. After the new interstate opened and the airport turned international, my stop turned into a pass through than a local place where people buy drinks and the occasional chips. I still keep it pretty clean though. Try to mop every day and restock the shelves to the best of my ability. It gets lonely, watching people come and go. Makes me question if this is what I'll do for the next thirty years. It’s not all bad though. Makes me excited to see who i’ll meet tomorrow.

Power Outage
Duke and Finnigan sat across from each other at the campfire, breathing light clouds of chilled breath. “We need to keep moving, the wolves will be patrolling soon”, Luke muttered while drinking warm water from his kettle. “I don’t know if I can get up Finny”. A howl echoed through the night. “You have to, I can’t make it to the generators by myself”. Duke stretches out his hand and tosses a rusty key to Finnigan. “When you turn the power back on, come back this way. If I'm still here, we can go home together.”

There was a betrayer in our midst. We had no way of knowing, for they kept their evil deeds cloaked in deception. Our little village of Hampshire was taken entirely by surprise when they committed their traitorous acts. We had no thoughts to predict that at the time of our celebrating the Sun's ascension to the highest point in the Northern Sky, they would strike with a most diabolical blow. A blow that has undoubtedly left a mark burned deep into the pure white light of our hearts.

His Haibun
He does not like poetry; I write it anyway and do not tell him. It's true his face is not a poet's face. It is round and open, youthful; too apt to be compared to the sun. His nose is neat. It is impossible to imagine him smoking a cigarette, terse, full of cheekbones and tension. His warmth burns my fingertips. I am here for his fascinating body, the haphazard freckles I touch one by one; he is here for my eyes, just my eyes. A sunbeam sneaks through the curtains and pierces us both, sizzling the spices of his skin. I inhale and wrap myself in him. He kisses my eyes.
