Why is it so hot already? Dell pushed himself off of his bed and placed his hand on the floor vent. The only cold he felt was the metal grate. He sucked his teeth and walked over to the tiny closet. The hangers screamed along the metal bars as he pushed them to the side. Dell grabbed the big, light blue, box fan from the back of the closet and tossed it on his queen sized bed. He chuckled to himself remembering his mother laughing at him and Malik struggling to get the bed in his tiny room. Then he smiled because he had the first good night’s sleep in a few weeks. Dell didn’t know the name of the emotion he was living. There were several times during the evening he lingered in the midst of relief and disappointment. The first time was when he got back to Tori’s house and noticed Trudy wasn’t home. He was initially relieved because he knew she knew more than she let on. On the other hand, Dell knew she was his strongest ally and would defend him if needed. She would also dote upon him once he told her about his plans to go to college and become a teacher. He was pleased that she would be proud of him.

Tori and Tony were sweating, panting, and sliding up and down the wall of Trudy’s basement. Every fifteen minutes or so, Tony would stop to wipe the sweat from his bushy brow or take a sip of water before curling his lip up at Tori. Tori rolled her eyes and reached into the front pocket of her denim overalls for her phone before playfully slapping at Tony’s chest.
