Short Story
It doesn't even call itself a warrior
Zyrrak watched as the shuttle touched down on the landing pad. As a Xenopsychologist he had been tasked with studying the footage of a colony from some new primitive species that had been discovered. Though primitive was relative, these creatures had achieved spaceflight and even some basic form of FTL but compared to the Qrixol Empire primitive was still an apt description. The chance to study a new species was rare, and to have one’s name attached to a new slave species even more so as most species weren’t even worthy of that honour.

The Gossip
The river ran backwards on the day the Queen vanished. What was left of it at least. Could I even call it a river, it looks not much more than a creek within a canyon carved from the monstrous force it once was. But enough of that, that was the bi product of what had been. Dry season after dry season, water becoming sparse, food running low, and tempers high within the walls of the city, let alone the villages about it. The people, they blame her, the queen that is. They say it is her fault the gods have not blessed us with rain, that they do not fill our rivers and lakes, that they do not water our lands and our crops. Maybe they are right... if you believe such things that is.

Of Sin & Sigil. Runner-Up in Fantasy Prologue II Challenge.
The river ran backwards the day the Queen vanished; That’s what the rumors spreading throughout the kingdom had said anyway. Ashbel discovered truth in these rumors as he now witnessed the odd phenomenon firsthand. What the accounts failed to mention was that all four of the kingdom's cardinal rivers followed this trend. He’d walked the city and found that each flowed back to their origin — the Tree of Salvation, Yggdrasil. Even on its lone island at the center of the city the mountainous tree dominated the scenery, casting shadows on the districts below.
