The Chase That Never Ends
The countryside was beautiful, sure sunlit fields rolling into the horizon, birds singing in the distance, and a porch swing that groaned like it had a lifetime of secrets to share. But it was quiet. Too quiet. No tiny footsteps scurrying inside the walls. No cheese mysteriously disappearing from the fridge. No traps rigged with ridiculous precision, only to spectacularly backfire.

Wireless
It wasn't real, none of it. It had felt real. The ladles of reheated stew scalded their tongues, the steam carried the hearty smell right up their noses. (Can you eat in dreams? Can you smell things? Are you sure?) The water hadn't been warmed, and the washcloth was as harsh as their mother's expression. The way her frown deepened when they asked about Wild Edric, her hissing "Shhh!" It was all too specific. It had to be real. The pyjamas were clean, the milk warm. It tasted a bit funny, but their parents wouldn't throw it out until it had actual lumps in it, so they asked for more honey, and gulped it down with hardly a grimace. It should have been real. Sinking into the pillows was when they realised that they hadn't truly left the hillside at all. It had followed them somehow, got under their skin, or inside their heads. It was like waking with a start to the unsettling twilight, tangled in that wretched fog like bedsheets. Plunged back into the confusion, the chill, the odd sounds coming from all sides. Men yelling, metal clanging, hooves clattering. Threading around it all, the weeping of a woman... And the worst? When it all went terribly quiet, the chest tightened, and they knew he was close by. At any moment they'd catch sight of him. Or, just as frightening, not see him at all, but know just as surely that he's there somewhere. Certain of it, but not knowing when, or where, he might appear. Joanie was sprawled on the path again, rocks digging into her back and stabbing pains in her ankle. Her own scream echoed in her ears. No! No this is not real, we made it home! I know we did! I remember it! "Ned! Ned!" There was no answer. Any moment now, Ned would burst through the fog, he'd be standing right in front of her, larger than life and twice as vital. Carrying a big stickand asking her if she was alright... But no, the moment for that had passed already, hadn't it? The fog shifted, rearranged itself around the suggestion of a man... Tall. Cloaked. No! Joanie screamed again, scrunching her eyes tight and opening them again. When that didn't work, she pinched and clawed at the skin on her arms. This, surely, should wake her from this nightmare... but it didn't. The fog coiled around her, sticky, tar-like and clinging, keeping her here... It had Ned in its clutches as well. He could hear his sister's scream, but he couldn't move to go to her, to help her. Was it fear that kept him rooted to the spot? Was he a coward, then? He looked down, and his feet were stones, half-sunk into the ground, and impossible to shift. He stared in horror. Not real, he told himself, Can't be real...

Endurance
Brewed Awakening is not the best coffee shop in Chicago, but it is, arguably, the most committed to the bit. The “Grand Opening” banner on the door is faded from three winters of north-facing wind, the tip jar by the register rotates weekly between “Help Me Buy New Sneakers” and “Our Cat Needs a Dental Plan,” and the tables wobble unless you seat yourself with a practiced hand. Inside, it’s a stew of old couches and misfit chairs, the air thick with the sweet-burnt smell of espresso and that background jazz every neighborhood café think will make people linger.

Endurance
There is a certain gravity in the Beeks living room, the kind that draws eyes upward to the crown molding and out again toward the garden, where late-spring sunlight slants through the glass with surgical precision. Every surface gleams, the air humming faintly with the blend of lemon polish, orchid, and something more expensive: the expectation of perfection. The rug—cream, hand-tufted, no visible stains—seems spun out of air, refusing to acknowledge the row of shoes lined at the threshold, as if the dirt of the world could not possibly invade this room.

Fog
Her scream was a sad and muffled thing, under the thick blanket of fog. The figure appearing so suddenly out of it was enough to scare her half out of her wits. And if the front of her dress was wet with her terror, who can blame her? She was only small, trapped in thickening darkness. Not to mention the sticky, tangling, choking fog. Peopled by weeping women just out of vision, and an unknown number of men shouting and clanging.... And that green-cloaked figure, galloping after them down the hill, or else shrouded in fog, waiting for them. But the figurein front of her wasn't much taller than she was, and he was brandishing a sticks not a sword or a knife. "Are you alright?" Ned said. "Oh, Ned, I thought you were, you know, him, come to- to-" "Don't," Ned said, more gently than usual. "Don't Joanie. Just think about getting home I got you a stick, see? To help you walk. Like I promised. We'll be home in no time, now." Joanie wanted to say, you've been saying things like that all day and it's took us hours and hours to get anywhere... But she squashed that and said, thank you instead. Ned rubbed a hand over the back of his neck. "It's alright," he said. "It was so brave," Joanie said, struggling to her feet and leaning on it. "It must have been so scary out there by yourself." "It was a bit," Ned said. "But we've both got to be brave, haven't we?" Joanie knew that if she broke down, fell, started crying... his patience would run out, and fear would make him harsh and short-tempered. "I'll try," she said, "Really I will.... but I can't run, Ned, I can't." "We'll be alright if we stick together. We'll be home before you know it." Joanie really wanted to believe him. They set off down the path. Much slower now, Joanie hobbling and leaning on the sturdy stick Ned had found for her. It was getting darker with every passing moment. They both peered around all the time. Neither wanted to careen into the mysterious figure in the darkness. They strained their ears for the strange noises...the woman, crying, the band of men shouting, the sound of metal on metal... Maybe they'd left all that behind, Ned thought, and Joanie hoped much the same. Unnatural quiet twisted around them, chilly and thick like snow. They pressed through it. * The sight of the familar path that backed on to their home almost made them collapse with a huge, sagging relief. Joanie hobbled a bit faster, wincing. Ned felt wobbly in his tummy, and blinked away tears he hadn't dared let his sister see. "Ned? Joanie? Is that you?" Their mother's voice sounded shrill and harsh. "It's us," Ned called back, "Joanie hurt her foot so it took us a while to walk back..." The scolding started, and the shooing indoors, and the dismay at their muddy clothes. ...and look at the state of your dress, I'll have to cut it up for rags..." !!... as if we haven't got enough to be worried about, with the state of the country..." "...you were supposed to be back before dark..." II...you missed dinner..." The words washed over them, and they bowed their heads, trying to look suitably shame-faced. We made it. We're home. Their mother was tutting and exclaiming over Joanies foot and ankle, which was swollen and bruised. "I told you to mind her," she shot at Ned. "I did, didn't I?"Ned shot back. "I stayed with her and found her a stick, and walked her all the way back-" His father's hand descended to cuff him round the head, which stopped him mid-flow and made his eyes water. "Don't you speak to your mother like that," he said scowling and gruff. "It wasn't Ned's fault," Joanie piped up. "I fell because we were running from the man in the green cloak-" Ned joined in, and between them they tried to tell their parents about - "-the fog was weird, and thick and-" "-there were hoofbeats-" "-a woman crying-" Their mother went pale. Their father rounded on her, crosser than ever. "This is your fault," he snapped. "Telling them all those stories." "I never told them about Wild Edric," she said. "Wild who? Who's he?" "Never you mind," their mother said. "Let's get you cleaned up and get some supper down you." *

Endurance
The Lewis living room is exactly as Michael remembers it—faintly lemon-scented from an eternal pledge to Lemon Pledge, the light glancing off honey-oak trim, floorboards shiny from half a century of determined foot traffic. The walls are lined with family photos in matching frames: Michael at nine, chin smudged with baseball dirt; Marsha with her arms around a toddler version of him; Mitchell in a yellowed tuxedo, cradling a blushing bride. All the moments that counted, preserved under glass. Even the couch, brown corduroy and still faintly ridged with the memory of childhood naps, feels like it’s been waiting for this day.

Shroud
Feet and hearts pounding, and gripping hands tight, the two children tore through the fog. It boiled around them like a live thing, like it was in cahoots with the sinister figure on the ridge. On his horse. That green cape fluttering, that axe-wedge of a face turned on them like a torch beam.

Pooh meets Paddington
Piglet climbed down the small tree and smiled and walked over to Eeyore and handed him his tail. He found a safety pin and attached to Eeyore's back end. Eeyore was just so happy wiggling it around. He offered his thanks to all involved and joined in the party that seemed to be growing to get Paddington back to London proper. Who will they meet next? Could it be....
