Nails of the Mermammals: A Tail of Origins and Transformations
I counted the days by how much my child's fingernails grew. Half an inch measured two days. One inch measured four days. I knew it would be one week if they became long enough to trim. I taught them this same technique for telling time and space. They had many questions, each of them answered repeatedly and always enthusiastically. I always enjoyed telling them our family's fingernail origin story and why our manicure rituals were so important to us.

Crimson Passion
In the quaint town of Ravenswood, nestled between the dense woods and the shimmering lake, a dark and mysterious legend echoed through the generations. It was a tale of forbidden love, Crimson Passion: The Blood Bond. Centuries ago, there were two families, the Montagues and the Van Helsings, who were sworn enemies due to a long-standing feud over ancient disputes. The Montagues were rumored to be cursed, their lineage tainted by a thirst for blood. The Van Helsings, on the other hand, were known as vampire hunters, protectors of the town from the cursed bloodline. Amidst this animosity, young Isabella Montague and Alexander Van Helsing found themselves drawn to one another. Their love was forbidden, as their families would never approve of such a union. Nevertheless, fate had its way of intertwining their destinies, and they couldn't resist the magnetic pull they felt towards each other. Their clandestine meetings occurred in the depths of the forest, where the shadows concealed their love from prying eyes. Isabella and Alexander reveled in each other's presence, their hearts entwined, blissfully unaware of the consequences their love might bring. One moonlit night, as they wandered deeper into the woods, they discovered an ancient tombstone, engraved with cryptic symbols and a chilling warning: "Beware the Crimson Passion, for it binds blood and soul, a bond not to be broken." Undeterred by the ominous words, Isabella and Alexander sealed their love with a kiss, unaware that their blood mingled in that moment. Unknowingly, they had activated an age-old spell, one that would bind their souls together for eternity. As days turned to weeks, Isabella and Alexander's love grew stronger, but so did the tensions between their families. The town was on edge, sensing the impending storm that would shatter the fragile peace. The Montagues and Van Helsings were at the brink of open warfare, and in the heart of it all, the star-crossed lovers were trapped in a love that was doomed from the start. Desperate to find a solution, Isabella sought the wisdom of an old witch, who revealed the truth of the blood bond. The only way to break the curse was to prove the strength of their love by surviving a series of trials that tested the very core of their emotions. Isabella and Alexander faced each trial with unwavering determination, but the weight of their families' hatred bore heavily upon them. Their love, once a beacon of hope, now became the source of their torment. In the final trial, they were forced to choose between their love and the peace of the town. If they stayed together, their families would suffer eternal enmity, but if they parted ways, the blood bond would claim their lives. Their hearts torn, Isabella and Alexander made the ultimate sacrifice for the greater good. They chose to separate, knowing that their love would forever linger in their souls, despite the pain of being apart. As they bid their tearful farewell, the curse was broken, and the town was finally freed from the generations-old enmity. Yet, the memory of their love persisted, etched into the town's history like an indelible scar. The years passed, and Ravenswood became a haven of peace, but the tale of Crimson Passion still haunted the hearts of its people. Isabella and Alexander's sacrifice became a symbol of the enduring power of love, transcending even the darkest of curses. In the centuries that followed, stories of their love echoed through time, inspiring new generations to cherish love's essence, even in the face of adversity. And so, the legend of Crimson Passion: The Blood Bond lived on, a bittersweet reminder of a love that was both cursed and blessed, forever etched in the annals of Ravenswood's history.
