Beneath the Vents
There weren’t always dragons in the valley. Sea dragons that is. Caeruleus wasn’t sure how they had adapted to the chill and pressure of the deep, but the destruction of their home kelp beds had forced the leafy sea dragons down into her people’s territory.

Fox Tales
There weren't always dragons in the Valley. Then one day without warning, the sky shattered and seemed to unzip in a streak of fire as a great rift tore open the Earth’s material plane, releasing dragons into the world once more. The people of the Taira Valley watched in shock and terror as dragons began pouring through the rift and descended on the nearby mountains and the single small village in the center of the valley. By the time the dragons moved on in all directions to claim their own territories, the village, and all of their crops and thatched roof homes were destroyed in flames. Over half of the village population died in the dragons’ wake. It was a nightmare beyond anything they had ever dreamed.

Between Destiny and the Heart
There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. Then again, there weren’t always mages in the Valley, either. Even now, when Fennon was supposed to be reciting the prayers of the Goddesses, she couldn’t stop thinking about the message her mother had written across the first page of her Alnesora Tome. It was the last, and truly only thing her mother left her. She tried to shake the phrase from her mind, bringing herself back to the morning offering, but her grip tightened around the tome she held in her arms. An exasperated groan rose from Fennon’s chest. The sound echoed against the slick walls of the temple, bouncing around the five Goddess statues behind her. Fennon adjusted, trying to relieve the discomfort of cold granite seeping through her dress, biting at her knees.

Wisteria and the Valley of Dragons
There weren't always dragons in the valley. There were tales of about creatures of darkness that plagued the land of Zimm. These creatures were wendigoes, evil wraith-like beasts who stalked the landscape like ravenous wolves. Our ancestors lived in fear of them, as the wendigoes could swarm on anything in their path. They were said to be created from the same stuff nightmares were made of.

They Came from Ice
There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. Many things had changed over the long years. Earth used to be a green, beautiful place. Now there were miles and miles of volcanic landscape, brimstone and ash suffocating the air. When the seas started rising, people began moving inland. Fast climbing heat came in torrential waves. Millions lost everything. By that point, it was too late to stop what was already in motion. So began the Second Great Migration as humanity attempted to escape north.

Elders' Valley
"There weren't always dragons in The Valley. I remember when the bartenders and bouncers held the line against those giant glowing serpents at the compound wall, armed to the teeth and marked head to toe with elder spells. You never saw a fight like that"

There's No Crying Over Spilled Dragon Blood
“There weren’t always dragons in the Valley.” We rolled our eyes as the van came to an abrupt stop, jolting everyone halfway out of our seats. Duffy always said the same thing when we arrived on the scene for cleanup duty. Lately, that was practically every other day, so everyone was heartily sick of it, anticipating what came next. I glanced at the rearview mirror and saw Stephen from his place at the front passenger seat, a small, sardonic smile lifting one side of his mouth.

Ormr
There weren’t always dragons in the valley, that is until the skies spat out an egg that seemed made entirely of iron. It leaked clouds that gave an odor that made those who tried to seek it spew what was left of their stomachs. Elders believed it to be a gift from Odin himself and the tribe did what little they could to harvest the abundant metal for weapons and farming tools, though barely enough was collected for the smith to make a fishing net no larger than two hands of fish.

Journey of Craters and Mists
There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. At least, that’s what people said, mostly grandparents who had heard it from their grandparents who, for all Elisa knew, had heard it from their grandparents. The dragons had arrived when their mountain homes were destroyed by the bombs of the Final World War, pushing generations of humans out of the too-hot Fernando Valley and up into the destroyed hills. It was an upset of the natural order, and yet it had remained for generations.
