Mother of the Valley, Child of the Sea
There was a child in the forest. Small, asleep, and dressed all in red, the boy was curled into a mossy nook between the roots of a great redwood. His cheeks were rosy and his face was peaceful. He couldn’t have been more than two years old. Morning sunlight illuminated his soft blond curls into a golden halo, as though he was a small angel who had come down to earth for a nap.

Something to Protect
The child had been crying, stumbling around the forest for hours. It was strange that nothing had yet come to investigate. Twilight had come with a blood-red sky, then gone with a gentle wind that whispered through the pines. Moonlight now lit the woods in quiet, warm silver light that flickered gently through the branches over the tiny human.

The Dragons' Daughter
He had come to the forest to visit the Shrine; he hadn't imagined he'd be clearing its rubble. He paused at the edge of the grove and surveyed the damage. Bits of charred wood slumped over the stone foundation, and a lump near the back showed where an altar had been. Most of the surrounding trees were unharmed, though soot hung to the leaves like black veils of mourning.

Tamarri
“The yellow fog burns hot in the back of his throat and sears his eyes shut. His bare hands scramble in the mud beside him, searching frantically for his protective mask. His left hand dips into a pool of liquid, and a chilled sensation creeps through his glove to his skin. It’s a burning chill, as if he spent a night sleeping on the snow-capped peaks of these very mountains, woke up, drew a warm bath, and submerged his body in the scalding water. You know the feeling. Where you can’t tell if the water is hot or cold. It’s a temperate burn. He's lucky he can neither see nor sense the pain, for he’d surely cry out as his hand melts in the molten hot spring in front of him. But most of all, he’s lucky it’s just his hand.
