The Island
“The Island” By: Mindy L. It was a warm sunny morning on this beautiful Island, and Laura opened the blinds to her window in her cottage room. She turns around and makes her a pot of coffee and turns on this little radio on the kitchen counter and says let’s get this vacation started. She puts on one of her summer dresses that she bought for her trip and then pins her long brown hair up in to a messy bun and puts on her sandals and heads out the door. She walks down the wooden ramp and out onto the sand and looks around, nothing but sand and water in her sight. She thought to herself where is everyone else. She knew when she arrived there was a bunch of people on the beach and also in the lobby when she checked in. She walks around the beach and is amazed by all the pretty sparkles coming off of the water, the water was so crystal clear and you could see right through it. She continues to wonder around, and she sees this sea turtles crawling in the sand right by the shore line. She goes over and takes pictures with her handheld camera. This deep male voice says they’re very unique aren’t they? She jumps backwards and falls into the sand pile behind her. As she opens her eyes she sees this very handsome man standing over her. He offers a hand to help her up and she takes it. He introduces himself and she just stares into his eyes. Phil steps back and chuckles at her, she said I’m sorry I don’t mean to stare, but you are: and then she pauses. She said I have to go and she walked away. See Laura is a small town woman that is going to collage to be a Social Worker and is a shy and very quiet. On the other hand Phil is an outgoing, handsome, business man who has been all over the world due to traveling for his work. He also lives in the city in an uptown condo. Night falls and this Island is just absolutely gorgeous, Laura still has not seen another human all day except Phil. She starts to get worried as well as hungry, so she goes to the Lounge. She hears someone signing and hears noise in the kitchen, as Laura walks up to the counter Phil walks out the kitchen door. They begin a conversation and Phil shares with her why he is there and she tell him she is just on vacation. They both start to talk about where everyone else is and then all of a sudden they hear this big loud boom. They run outside and the clouds are pitch black and it’s pouring down rain. The wind picks up and the ocean is ripping in waves. Phil yelled it’s a hurricane take cover, so they both run back inside. Shortly after they get inside the wind rips the roof half way off, it was made of straw and a thin piece of tin. So they grab one of the brochure’s laying on the bar and as Laura flips through for the safety section, Phil grabs flash light and anything else he can think of that they will need. Laura finds the shelter bunker on the brochure and they make a run for it. They safely get inside and they wait out the storm. When the wind is no longer whistling Phil opens the door and he goes and checks out the Island, it is safe for them to come out. They notice that everything is destroyed and they have no way to contact anyone for help or a way to leave the Island so they sit and think what they can do. As they sit there and come up with ideas they realize that they are two totally different people and have no clue how they are going to survive on this Island. All of a sudden they hear a horn in the distance and Phil realizes it’s a fog horn. They run to the edge of the water and in the distance they can see what looks like a boat. They both start to yell and scream, “help” “over here”. The people in the boat hears them and comes to their rescue. On the boat ride back Laura tells herself this man is not my type and I more and likely will never see him again. They arrive at the loading docks and they both go their separate ways.

There were not always dragons in the Valley. I will see them gone from that place once more. My father wept when I made my pledge, a rare thing. The tears fell from behind his mask like warm, summer rain. His attachment to me was a failing on his part, a stumble upon the Path. Yet I was gladdened to see him weep for me; a failing on mine. Later, upon my journey, I kept the memory of my father’s tears close, and felt a little less alone.
