Snow and Ice
We drove up the snowy winding road towards the cozy A-frame cabin. The setting sun danced amongst a backdrop of mountainous evergreen trees as a deep wintry calm settled into my chest. Gone was the hustle and bustle of the big city. A whole weekend free of car horns, police sirens, fighting drunkards, and flashing lights laid out before us on a glistening white carpet. Snow crunched beneath the tires as I turned onto Cabin A’s private gravel drive. White smoke billowed out of the chimney ahead, and I saw that I was not the first to arrive.

Maine getaway
Maine Getaway We drove up the snowy, winding road towards the cozy A-frame cabin. With such high anxiety and anticipation both my husband and I couldn’t wait for the fun to begin. Finally, reaching the driveway of our cabin. Wow…we couldn’t believe how big the cabin is in size. The advertisement picture of this place does no justice when you see it in person. I can’t wait to see the inside. Getting out of the car felt great, stretching my legs from a long drive now the challenging part, getting our luggage from the car and into the cabin. Yes, we brought a lot of things. At last, we made it to the front door. My husband has the key to unlock the door that is hiding the true beauty of what is inside. Yes, the magic key worked, the door opened, and our eyeballs popped out. Both of us yelled out. “Holy Cow! Look at this place. It was magnificent.”

Holiday Hijinks
We drove up the snowy, winding road towards the cozy A-frame cabin. And I wished I were anywhere else but here. Don't get me wrong. I love the mountains. I love the cold, the snow, the snug way the cabin feels when there's nowhere to go and all you need to do is drink hot chocolate and play card games. Or pull out the snowshoes, or make a snowman. What I don't love is the people I'd be spending this particular vacation with.

Falling Snow, Passing Time
We drove up the snowy, winding road towards the cozy A-frame cabin. It sat leaning over the edge of the mountain, the side of which we were driving along. It's comfortable, wintry, colorful appearance evoked a sort of Dickensian-Appalachia type of feeling. The gravel of the narrow road crunched under the weight of the Landcruiser’s tires. One the ground, squirrels dug around in the snow, searching for something to eat.

Far From Home
The air was heady with the subtle incense of wisteria after rain. Other flowers were mixed in with the wisteria, and unfamiliar scents that Thomas supposed were unique to country living. About the only thing truly familiar was the noise and smoke of the train engine as it chugged along, carriages crammed full of children being sent away from London to the relative safety of the countryside.

Potato Person Pt. 1
There once was a peculiar person who lived in a shack. Day after day, morning became night and night became day. Neither sprouting nor deteriorating, the person did not receive enough sunlight. At the same time, the person ate through fruits, vegetables, and everything left in the shack by their great grandfather.

The Windfall Weekend
We drove up the snowy, winding road towards the cozy A-frame cabin. The roads were treacherous, but this was a much-needed getaway for us and so, despite the warnings on the news to stay off the roads due to one of the most threatening winter storms we’ve seen in decades, we loaded up the truck and threw it into 4 wheel drive. We had made it this far, though not far at all considering we were only 2 ½ hours north of home and just across the border into the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It was already bringing back a multitude of childhood memories for me, being up here “in da UP, eh”. We were headed to Big Powderhorn ski resort to do some snowboarding and enjoy some quality time with just the two of us & let reality slip into the shadows of the small-scale mountains for a few days. Little did I know how much the weekend would end up impacting me as we drove up the private road and the sun set behind us.
