The Alderman family were preparing for bed as winter roared outside. It was a chilled and freezing night, but the house was warm and cozy, the heat cranked up to maximum. Outside the wind moaned and the shutters groaned. The limbs on the trees made loud swishing noises, while the weeping willow mournfully swayed, as if tonight, it was expecting somber news. But then, willow was like that, except when the wind rested and a rare silence embraced the night...then the tree just drooped woefully.

The Tale of Bano and Rano: A Lesson in Kindness BY: Ubaid Once upon a time, in a small neighborhood, there lived two young girls named Shama Naz Bano and Rano. They were close friends, but very different in nature. Bano was intelligent, hardworking, and thoughtful. She took her schoolwork seriously and always helped with household chores. Everyone admired her wisdom and sense of responsibility. Rano, on the other hand, was the complete opposite. She was carefree, lazy, and not very sharp. Instead of helping others, she often avoided work and preferred an easy life. Despite their differences, the two girls spent a lot of time together. --- Bano’s Journey to Her Grandmother’s House One summer, Bano decided to visit her grandmother, who lived in another village. She packed her things and happily set out on her journey. On the way, she encountered a cow sitting in the field. The cow looked at her and said, “Dear child, will you please clean away the dung around me so that I may sit comfortably?” Bano did not hesitate. She quickly cleaned the area, leaving the cow in peace, and continued her journey. A little further down the road, she came across a banyan tree. The tree spoke gently, “My child, look at all these dry leaves scattered around me. People sit in my shade and leave a mess. Could you kindly clean it up for me?” Bano smiled, gathered the leaves, and tidied up the space beneath the tree. After walking some distance, she saw a large stone. The stone, too, spoke to her: “Dear one, there are broken pieces of rock scattered all around me. Please clear them away.” Bano once again obeyed, tidying up the pieces. With her kind actions, she reached her grandmother’s house safely. --- Rewards of Kindness At her grandmother’s house, Bano helped with everything—sweeping, cooking, washing, and even taking care of her grandmother. Her grandmother was touched by her kindness and affection. When it was time for Bano to return home, the old woman gave her many gifts: clothes, sweets, and other lovely things. On the way back, Bano once again passed the same places. But this time, each one rewarded her. The stone had turned into a golden stone, surrounded by bricks of gold. It said, “Dear child, take as many bricks as you wish.” Bano took only a few, enough to help her family. When she reached the banyan tree, its branches now hung with beautiful and precious clothes. The tree said, “Take some for yourself, my child.” She selected a few garments and thanked the tree. Finally, the cow offered her fresh, sweet milk and delicious sweets to carry home. Bano returned home with joy, bringing her treasures to share with her family. --- Rano’s Jealousy When Rano saw Bano’s gifts and heard about her journey, she grew jealous. “If Bano can get all these wonderful things, so can I,” she thought to herself. Without wasting time, Rano announced that she too would visit her grandmother. On her way, she met the same cow. The cow requested, “Dear child, could you clean the dung around me?” But Rano frowned and replied rudely, “I am not Bano. Do your own cleaning!” She walked away arrogantly. Soon she reached the banyan tree, which asked her to clear away the fallen leaves. Rano scoffed, “I am not your servant! Why should I clean up your mess?” The tree fell silent, disappointed. Then she met the stone, which made the same request as before. Rano kicked the stones aside and shouted, “I don’t have time for this nonsense.” --- Disrespect Leads to Punishment Finally, Rano reached her grandmother’s home. Unlike Bano, she did no work, offered no help, and showed no respect. Instead, she demanded food, gifts, and attention. She spent her time eating, playing, and ordering her grandmother around. When it was time to return, her grandmother gave her nothing. She had seen through her laziness and selfishness. On her way back, the punishments began. The stone rained sharp little rocks upon her, leaving her bruised. The banyan tree showered her with dry leaves, covering her from head to toe. And when she reached the cow, it kicked her so hard that she fell to the ground, injured and crying. Rano limped back home, humiliated and hurt. --- The Moral of the Story The contrasting journeys of Bano and Rano hold a timeless lesson: kindness always brings rewards, while selfishness and arrogance lead to loss and suffering. Bano’s generosity and willingness to help others not only made her grandmother proud but also earned her blessings in unexpected ways. Rano’s rudeness and laziness, however, left her empty-handed and punished. The story reminds us that life often mirrors our actions. When we respect and support others, goodness comes back to us in abundance. But when we act with selfishness, we may find ourselves facing hardships. So, let us all remember: Helping others is never wasted—it always returns to us in beautiful ways.

The Greedy Merchant and the Honest Woodcutter BY:Khan Once upon a time, in a small village on the edge of a vast forest, there lived a poor woodcutter. Every morning he would set out with his worn axe to chop wood, which he sold in the market to earn just enough for bread and a little fire for his family. His life was simple, yet he carried within him a heart full of contentment and honesty. One day, while cutting wood deep inside the forest, the woodcutter noticed something unusual hidden among a cluster of old trees. At first, he thought it was just another rock, but when he went closer, he realized it was a stone idol, half-buried under the earth. Out of curiosity, he moved the idol aside, and to his surprise, beneath it appeared a small hollow in the ground. The woodcutter began clearing the soil around it, and soon his eyes widened in disbelief—inside lay a treasure chest overflowing with gold coins, jewels, and ornaments glittering in the sunlight. For a poor man who had known only hardship, it was a sight beyond imagination. His heart raced, yet he quickly realized that he could not carry such a vast fortune alone. He covered the treasure carefully with earth and branches, deciding to return later with help. As he walked back toward the village, still overwhelmed by what he had found, he came across a wealthy merchant traveling along the same road. The merchant had six camels loaded with goods he had just sold in a nearby town. The woodcutter thought for a moment and then said to the merchant: “Brother, I have discovered a great treasure hidden in the forest. If you help me carry it out, I will show you where it lies. But I have one condition—you must share half of it with me.” The merchant’s eyes gleamed with excitement. He could hardly contain his eagerness. “Tell me quickly,” he said impatiently. “I agree to your condition without hesitation.” The woodcutter then led the merchant to the hidden spot and uncovered the treasure before him. Together, they filled the merchant’s six camels with gold, silver, and jewels until the animals staggered under the weight. In addition, the woodcutter found a small box containing a precious ruby, which he quietly slipped into his pocket. True to his promise, the merchant handed over three camels loaded with treasure to the woodcutter. But as they began their journey back, greed started whispering in the merchant’s heart. “Why did I give him so much?” he thought to himself. “If I had offered him less, he would still have agreed. He is a poor, simple man; he does not know the value of this wealth.” At last, the merchant turned to the woodcutter and said, “Dear friend, I have already given you three camels full of treasure, but you are a humble man. Two camels are more than enough for your needs. Give me back one, and you will still have plenty.” The woodcutter, who was modest by nature, replied kindly, “Very well, take one more camel. Two will be sufficient for me.” The merchant smiled, thanking him, but inside he felt no gratitude. Instead, his greed grew stronger. After a little while, he spoke again: “Good sir, you are like a saint, content with little. But I am a man of the world, burdened with children and responsibilities. Why not give me the other two camels as well? I will pay you some money in return, and your needs will still be fulfilled.” The woodcutter hesitated but then agreed, thinking, “Perhaps it is destiny that I should remain poor.” He accepted a small pouch of coins in exchange and handed over the rest of the camels. But the merchant’s greed had no end. His mind now burned with a new plan. “Why should this fool even keep the money?” he thought. “And what if there is still more treasure hidden in the forest? If I can find it, I will be richer than any king.” So he left his servant with the camels and returned alone to the forest, determined to uncover the rest of the treasure. For hours he searched, digging and wandering among the trees, but he could not find the place again. Exhausted and frustrated, he sat under a tree to rest. Just then, a lion appeared from the thicket, its golden eyes fixed upon him. The merchant panicked and tried to run, but the lion leapt with a mighty roar and brought him down. Within moments, the greedy man’s cries were silenced, and his body was torn apart. The treasure he had longed for remained in the earth, and the fortune he had loaded onto the camels was carried away by his servant, never to return to him. Meanwhile, the humble woodcutter lived on peacefully with the ruby he had found. It was not enough to make him a king, but it was sufficient to provide a comfortable life for his family. He never let greed blind him, and because of his honesty and contentment, he enjoyed a life of quiet happiness. Moral of the Story Greed is a bottomless pit that never satisfies. The woodcutter’s honesty and simplicity brought him peace, while the merchant’s endless craving for more cost him everything—his wealth, his honor, and even his life.

"Knock, knock, knock" I waited until they left, just like they always do, in a huff and with the screech of car tires. After that my day started like the last ten, one hundred, one thousand days have started. A good stretch, a good cry, holding my wife's pillow and a drawing. I pulled out my sketchbook and wandered around the house, looking for where the light shone through the window best. I dragged my stool close to the window so I could sit with my back to the outside world. I peered down at my shadow, faint today with the cloudy sky but there nonetheless. I was never especially good at portraiture according to my mentor. After Diana, I stopped drawing altogether. But my therapist said it would help me cope so. Looking at my shadow, I start to piece together my shape as seen on the floor. Light shifts and changes so I have to work fast but time constraints don’t stress me much.

The King’s Thief Long ago, in the days when kings ruled over every land and the fate of ordinary people depended on their slightest command, there lived a loyal servant in the court of a mighty ruler. This man was not just any servant; he was a trusted officer, respected by many and accustomed to the honor of serving close to the throne. One unfortunate day, however, the king became displeased with him. The reason was small, yet kings in those days were quick to anger, and their punishments were severe. Out of irritation, the king ordered the officer to be dismissed from court. Not only that, he gave a strange command: “You shall not leave your home. You must remain shut inside, neither to work nor to mingle with others. Stay within your walls, day and night, until further notice.” At first, the punishment seemed simple—almost harmless. But as the days passed, the reality became unbearable. To be trapped in one place, unable to work, unable to see new faces, and with nothing but time to waste—this was no ordinary hardship. The man grew restless, agitated, and full of despair. Worse still, he had a family to feed. His children’s stomachs cried out for food, and his wife’s anxious eyes reminded him of his duty as a father and a husband. How could he provide for them when he could not even step outside his door? Poverty crept in like a shadow, heavy and suffocating. Then, by chance, news spread that the king was preparing a grand celebration. The court would once again be filled with ministers, princes, and noblemen. The dismissed officer’s mind began to stir with an idea. Desperation gave birth to cunning. One afternoon, he turned to his wife and said, “Go to the neighbors and borrow their finest robe. Tell them it is needed for an urgent occasion.” Obediently, his wife brought home a splendid garment, rich in fabric and glittering with embroidery. The former officer dressed himself in the borrowed attire, and suddenly, he no longer looked like a disgraced servant but like a man of high status. With his head held high, he walked confidently to the royal palace. The guards, fooled by his appearance, assumed he was an honored guest. They welcomed him with great respect and led him straight into the hall, where he was seated among dignitaries. The celebration began with grandeur. Music filled the air, dancers performed, and the king presided over the ceremony. When the feast was laid out, trays of the finest dishes covered the long tables. The disguised officer joined in, eating heartily, as though he belonged among them. But as he ate, greed whispered in his ear. Carefully, when no one was watching, he slipped a golden platter beneath his robes. At the end of the gathering, he slipped away unnoticed and returned home. That night, he proudly told his wife the entire tale. The golden platter was cut into small pieces and sold in the marketplace, providing them with enough money to live comfortably for months. For the first time since his dismissal, his children went to bed with full stomachs. Meanwhile, at the palace, the servants soon realized that one golden platter was missing. They searched high and low, trembling with fear of the king’s wrath. When they finally reported the loss, the king remained calm. “I know a golden platter is gone,” the king said quietly. “And I also know who has taken it. You will not find it, for it has already been cut into pieces.” The servants were astonished at the king’s certainty, but no further punishment was declared. A year passed, and once again, the royal festival was held. The dismissed officer, confident in his success, decided to repeat his scheme. Once more, he borrowed the fine robe, entered the palace disguised as a noble guest, and enjoyed the feast. And once more, he attempted to steal a golden platter. But this time, fate had other plans. As he slipped toward the door, hiding the platter within his clothes, the king himself appeared before him. The officer froze. His legs trembled, his face turned pale. The king looked directly into his eyes and said, “Last year you carried away one platter. And now you wish to take another?” The officer’s courage collapsed. The platter clattered to the ground as he fell at the king’s feet, sobbing. “Your Majesty, forgive me!” he cried. “When you confined me to my home, I had no means to feed my wife and children. Hunger drove me to this shameful act. It was never my nature to steal, but desperation blinded me. Have mercy!” The king was silent for a long while, lost in thought. At last, he spoke. “Indeed, the fault is partly mine. I gave a punishment that left you no way to live with dignity. A man without work, with hungry children at home, may be forced to commit sins he never imagined. Your crime was wrong, but so was my decree. Therefore, I shall forgive you. You are restored to your post. But remember—stealing is always dishonorable, no matter the reason.” Tears of relief streamed down the officer’s face. He bowed deeply, promising never to repeat such an act. From that day onward, the officer served faithfully, and never again did he resort to theft. The king, too, learned a lesson: he never again punished a man in such a cruel and thoughtless way. Both ruler and servant admitted their mistakes, and their story became a reminder for generations to come. For in every age, one truth remains: hunger and despair can tempt a man toward crime, but wisdom and compassion can prevent it.
