Haste
“You must,” said the old man, a few moments before his death, “get the locket to Europa.” His death was instant, as if he had been just waiting to give me this task, as his final act. His face fell into the table, as if he was asleep, but it did not take long to realize he was dead. He hadn’t even finished his drink. This drew a couple of eyes of the other attenders of the Lonely Asteroid Saloon. It was not usual for someone to die in the bar, but the deaths usually involved guns or knives. It is exceedingly rare that someone should die so peacefully. Of course, it was not old age in his case; he had been poisoned, and knew of his death. I finished his drink for him. I stood up, and looked at the other person at the table, his granddaughter. She wore the heart shaped locket around her neck.

The Last Hope
In the year 2150, Earth was dying. The planet had become so polluted and overpopulated that it could no longer sustain life. The governments of the world had known about the impending crisis for decades, but they had been too busy with their own politics to do anything about it. In a last ditch effort to save humanity, a team of scientists had been working on a plan to terraform Mars. They had been working on the project for years, and they were finally ready to put their plan into action. The team consisted of five members: Dr. Sarah Davis, the team leader and an expert in atmospheric chemistry; Dr. James Lee, a biologist specializing in plant life; Dr. Maria Sanchez, a geologist and expert in Martian geology; Dr. John Peterson, an engineer who had designed the terraforming equipment; and Dr. Li Chen, a physicist who had developed the energy source for the equipment. The team had been sent to Mars on a spaceship equipped with everything they needed to carry out the terraforming process. They had landed on the planet and had set up their base camp in the Valles Marineris, the largest canyon in the solar system. The first step in the terraforming process was to create an atmosphere on Mars. Dr. Davis had developed a plan to do this by releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The team had set up a series of machines that would extract carbon dioxide from the Martian soil and release it into the atmosphere. The process was slow, but it was working. Over the course of several months, the team had managed to increase the atmospheric pressure on Mars to the point where it was now possible to breathe without a spacesuit. The next step was to introduce plant life to Mars. Dr. Lee had developed a series of genetically modified plants that were capable of surviving in the harsh Martian environment. The plants were designed to absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, which would further increase the atmosphere's oxygen content. The team had set up a series of greenhouses that were filled with the plants. They had also set up a system to provide the plants with water, which was extracted from the Martian soil. Over the course of several months, the plants had started to grow, and the atmosphere on Mars had started to change. The team had noticed that the sky was no longer the red color it had once been. It was now a pale blue, just like the sky on Earth. The team was excited about their progress, but they knew that they still had a long way to go. They had to find a way to generate enough energy to power the terraforming equipment and to sustain the plant life. Dr. Chen had been working on a solution to this problem. She had developed a device that was capable of generating energy from the Martian soil. The device was powered by a series of nuclear reactors, which would provide the energy needed to sustain the terraforming process. The team had set up the energy generators and had started to extract energy from the Martian soil. The process was slow, but it was working. Over the course of several months, the team had managed to create a habitable environment on Mars. The plants were growing, the atmosphere was changing, and there was now a source of energy to sustain the process. The team was elated. They had accomplished what they had set out to do. They had created a new home for humanity on a planet that had once been inhospitable. But their joy was short-lived. One day, the team received a message from Earth. It was a warning that a massive asteroid was headed for Mars, and that it would hit the planet in less than a year. ….. The team was devastated. They had worked so hard to make Mars habitable, and now it seemed like all their efforts would be for nothing. Dr. Davis called an emergency meeting to discuss the situation. “We have less than a year to prepare for the asteroid impact,” she said. “We need to come up with a plan to protect our base camp and our equipment.” Dr. Lee spoke up. “What if we use the plants to create a barrier around our base camp? We could plant them in a circle around us and they could absorb the impact of the asteroid.” The rest of the team looked at each other, impressed by Dr. Lee’s idea. “That’s brilliant,” said Dr. Sanchez. “We could use the geology of the canyon to our advantage as well. We could dig trenches on either side of the circle and use the soil to further absorb the impact.” Dr. Peterson nodded. “I can design a series of barriers that we can place around our equipment to protect it from debris.” The team got to work. They spent the next several months preparing for the asteroid impact. They planted the genetically modified plants in a circle around their base camp, dug trenches on either side, and constructed barriers around their equipment. As the asteroid grew closer, the team grew more and more nervous. They had done everything they could to prepare, but they still didn’t know if their plan would work. The day of the impact arrived. The team watched nervously from inside their base camp as the asteroid approached. As it hit the planet, they felt the ground shake beneath them. But then, something amazing happened. The plants that they had planted in a circle around their base camp began to glow. The impact of the asteroid had caused them to release a burst of energy that had absorbed the impact and protected the team and their equipment. The team was elated. They had saved their base camp and their equipment. But there was still the question of what to do next. Mars was still a harsh and inhospitable environment, and they were still the only humans on the planet. “We can’t stay here forever,” said Dr. Chen. “We need to find a way to bring more people to Mars, to start a new colony.” The team knew that this was their only hope. They had proven that it was possible to terraform Mars, and now they had to use that knowledge to save humanity. Over the next several years, the team worked tirelessly to expand their base camp and to develop new ways of generating energy and sustaining plant life. They sent messages back to Earth, urging the governments of the world to invest in the colonization of Mars. And slowly but surely, people started to listen. More and more resources were poured into the colonization effort, and within a decade, the first colony had been established on Mars. The team that had started it all had become legends. They were hailed as heroes, the ones who had saved humanity from extinction. And they knew that their work wasn’t done yet. They had to continue to push the boundaries of what was possible, to explore the universe and find new worlds to inhabit. But for now, they were content to bask in the knowledge that they had saved humanity from certain doom. They had given the world a new hope, a new chance at survival. And that was all that mattered.
