Adventure
October the Great
There’s a little-known fact in the universe: October wasn’t always the most beloved month. In fact, centuries ago, October was seen as a sort of awkward prelude to the “real” festivities of the year. Back then, it was known for its unpredictable weather, bland harvests, and that awkward feeling when the calendar reminded you the year was nearly over, and you still hadn’t hit your New Year’s resolutions. People couldn’t wait to fast-forward to the holiday season with its twinkling lights, pumpkin pies, and gift-giving chaos.

The Crest of Kokoi
Chapter 1: Embers of Betrayal There was a silent dreariness in her heartbeat, an emptiness that just grew. Each step was slower than the last as her confidence began failing. The insignificant imprints her feet left in the sand vanished as quickly as they had been laid, like whispers in the wind. She had only wanted simple things in life, simple things that others seemed to come by so easily. She yearned for that unconditional love that could raise a person from the barrenness of solitude, a simple touch from someone who saw life when he looked into her eyes.

An Atom Walks Into a Bar. AI-Generated.
It started like most bad decisions do—with boredom and booze. I was sitting in a musty Parisian café, nursing a bottle of something strong and nameless, the kind of drink that burns going down but sits quietly in the gut like an old regret. The kind of drink that makes a man ponder the universe and why he ever bothered waking up in the morning.

Courtney and I sit across from each other, the faint hiss of steam from the coffee machine punctuating the growing discomfort.
