Adventure
Huntress
As the sword cuts down at Selena’s head, she was surprised by what thoughts wound through her mind. We’ve told legends of the four horsemen for thousands of years. Stories passed down generation to generation. The details might change but the shape is always there. Yet for all the stories, when they came, we were still unprepared. A global pandemic brought the world to a standstill. Quarantine became mandatory and production halted. Famine soon swept along in its wake, and it wasn’t long after that the fighting began. Leaders of the world got greedy, or desperate, it was hard to tell in the end. War raged. Weapons were unleashed upon the world. Destruction in Mans hands and raining down from the sky. The explosions causing skylines to change and the earth to be reshaped.

A young man around the age of 18 groaned, finding himself lying face up and looking at the cracked ceiling. His vision blurred in and out, and he blinked his blue eyes in order to make it clearer. He took a glance at his legs to see two concrete slabs covering them in the shape of a teepee, leaving just enough space in the gap for his legs to be squeezed underneath, long cutting off the circulation. He groaned and felt around for something to pry the large slabs so he could have room to move his legs...He found a large pipe and propped it up, beginning to slide out with difficulty, he braced his abdominal muscles together in efforts to help his process. Inch by inch the young man slowly slid his lower legs out and let out a huge sigh at the effort, laying back on the ground to catch his breath. He shuddered slightly at the tingling sensation in his lower legs, wondering how long they had been like that. He leaned with his head back, closing his eyes before gathering his thoughts.

"Hey Mom, Mom come quick, look at this!" She slowly made her way to the only window we had to see the outside world. She peered at the anomaly in the sky which made her smile. She quickly turned around and spoke,

The colorful lights flood the square tonight and the breeze is light like angels kisses on my skin. You can tell summer is on its way. People in every corner are happy and talking to each other like there’s not a care in the world. Why is it then that I feel so alone, even in a crowd. It’s almost like I’m empty, with no spirit left with nowhere to belong. I’ve been going through the motions doing the things I know I’m supposed to, but it seems to have lost all meaning.

AAAAGGGGGGHHHHHH! I yell as I fall down a steep mountain with no way of stopping myself. I fall over and over until finally I slam shoulder first into a rock formation protruding from the Earth. I lay there for a second holding my shoulder. There is a slight loving warmth in my arm that runs from my shoulder to my wrist letting me know that it is probably separated. I hope not. I have to keep moving. They spotted me just before I fell like a crash test dummy for what seemed like forever down this mountain. To my side the locket Sasha gave me had come off of my neck and opened on the rock. Something is shining brightly from it as it lay there opened. There is a crystal attached to one side of the locket.
Broken
As I attempt to lift my head, I realize I haven’t got a clue where I am. The piercing light from the sun makes opening my eyes a struggle, and the heat searing into my skin makes me feel as if I could spontaneously combust at any moment.

07/21/2045 “This is all I have… I have nothing else. Just take it... Please.” The Tinker evaluates the man in front of his counter. A sandy shemagh concealing the man’s face, the Tinker’s brow furrows. The man’s voice sounded vaguely familiar, like a lost memory of a friend in another life. The man was old, that much the Tinker could deduct from the man’s posture and voice. His arm outstretched, the man held out a small heart shaped locket. The Tinker stared at it for a moment as revelation set in.

The faint pitter patter of footsteps echo in a deserted alley complimented by sounds of clanging tin and ruffling plastic bags. A small boyish figure, draped in rags, stood not 4 feet tall. This frail figure rummaged through any container or building that might produce something he could eat. Trifling through cupboards, trash bins and the like. By our standards he may have been 7 or 8 by this time.

As a young girl who is surviving the end of the world I have learned some things. Such as food is hard to find in large stores and that axes take longer to kill zombies. Yes you heard me right. Zombies, Z-O-M-B-I-E-S. Brain and flesh eating maniacs who wouldn't care if you were as sinless as a nun, you were still going to be their next meal. This put people in a panic and caused the world to fall to shit. Big cities took it the hardest because they were so densely populated. Which sucks donkey balls because I live in Chicago. Most of my family didn't survive, just me and my twin brothers, Conner and Jasper. We have been staying in an abandoned Costco which is easy to protect from the rafters which is where we sleep. Yet one morning that changed.

My name is Annabelle; it is February 25th, 2299, in Seattle, Washington. It has been almost one hundred years since shit got bad. Global warming has pushed the earth to its breaking point. Since sometime in the early 2000s, the ice caps started melting, causing the waters to rise. We are drowning, slowly. Most of the buildings are submerged several stories under the water if I am to guess. The water causes the city to be damp and chilly most of the time. My mom told stories about her great-grandma living in Seattle. She said it was raining almost always and when the sun did shine, well it didn’t. I dream a lot about what life was like before; we drive around in a car, looking up at the giant skyscrapers, and just being together. Now the only places I see are that of my people struggling to survive. It is not so bad, though; I belong to a small group of young outcasts all in their teens and twenties. We all have the same stories, parents dying, abandoning us, and some of us are still trying to find our way.

If life, twenty-five years worth of time, unbounded, ever reaching for the distant future, can flash before our eyes, why did this single moment linger for eternity? Silver as the underbelly of this self proclaimed God, her hair fluttered, covering her enduring face.
