Survival Island Day 1

A fantasy story of a girl trying to survive with her diary

Dear Diary,

Today was an interesting day, and I don’t mean that in a good way. I’ve been separated from family and friends, and worst of all my phone. All I have is this stupid diary and something else in my pocket. But, I did get shelter, food, water, and fire which is what I need for right now. So, let me tell you how this nice, exciting day turned into my worst nightmare.

I woke up slowly out of my comfy, blue bed trying not to make noise, as this old wood flooring could really be loud. I noticed how bright and warm looking it was outside and then sighed. I started getting out of bed, and then, “CREAK!” screamed the floor as I was walking my first step.

“Bean, are you awake?” my Mom yelled as soon as she heard the sound.

I yelled back lying, “Yeah, I’m just getting up to go to the restroom!”

“Ok, I can get some food ready!”

I blew out a big sigh whispering, “Dang, she’ll see me go out the door. Plan ruined. I guess I’ll have to tell the truth.”

I came out of my room and walked down the steps still not trying to make a sound, then I slipped at the top. Time slowed down as I fell, then a crack on the main level opened up. I was worried but at the same time curious about what was down the dark abyss. The hole grew bigger almost big enough for me to fit through- I was about ½ foot too tall- then it just snapped closed and I landed on the normal, creaky floor. My mom came over running to me yelling worryingly, “Oh my god, Bean, are you okay?”

It seemed that dark hole in the ground disappeared before my mom could see it. I answered, still a little phased, “Yeah, I’m fine just a little… confused.”

My mom began to help me off the floor telling me, “Okay sugar plum, make sure to eat the breakfast I made you.”

As she said that I thought, “Mom, I’m nine-teen years old, you don’t need to keep calling me sugar plum it’s just embarrassing.”

My mom began to walk away, but I whispered before she was fully out of the room, “You are so embarrassing.”

She still was walking out of the room, but I could tell that her face was a whole different story, for my words hurt her. I knew she was just trying to help but I couldn’t keep it in. I began to stare at the brown, wooden, table for two wondering if I’ll ever be able to say sorry, as I was sneaking out to go to college. I began walking to the table and sat down in the cushioned chair. I turned around and saw my mom having her back at me washing the dishes. I turned back around and looked at my food, it was on a white, glass plate and the actual food was 2 pieces of toast spread with strawberry jelly. I just stared at the food and didn’t eat it for about 5 minutes. My mom was still making so much noise washing the dishes with all the glass making cling noises when she placed them down on the nearby towel. I slowly got up out of the chair and walked up stairs to get my suitcase. I got to my room and got my last look at it, it looked bare as I’d taken almost everything out of it to bring to college. I was excited but at the same time worried because I’d finally gotten excepted into my dream college, but my mom would be so lonely as she got divorced last year. I then grabbed my suitcase and rolled it down the steps not caring whether or not it made a noise, it did make lots of noise. My mom was at the table staring at her food just the way I did. My mom looked sad, but I didn’t do anything to cheer her up I just looked at the black, wooden door and then walked straight out. My mom didn’t even turn around as I walked out the door.

When I got out I had a weird feeling in my stomach, like regret, but I ignored it and started walking to my car. Then, the black hole appeared again right underneath me and I started to fall, but I caught the edge of it. I was still carrying my suitcase while hanging in the hole.

I screamed, “Mom, help me I’m falling!”

Nobody answered it seemed that no one could hear me or see me for that matter, I was behind a big, gray, SUV. Nobody came so I dropped the suitcase and I could see it fall down until it got about 10 feet away from me. I never heard it land. I got even more scared then, as I didn’t want to die today, I had so much more potential. Then the matches I had in my pocket (for survival purposes) fell out into the dark abyss as well. I soon thought about how useful those strength classes could of came in, but right now wasn’t the time to worry, I could only hang on for, at most, 1 more minute. But, my mind was blank I couldn’t think of anything to do, I had nothing on me and I was too weak to pull myself up. I was doomed. So, I let go and started falling into the dark abyss closing my eyes while I thought of how death would be.

I opened my eyes to the brightness and warmth of the sun. I was sweating so much, it felt like 90° outside. The sun was rising, so I assumed I was on the East of the island. I figured I’d been out there for an hour before I opened my eyes. I sat up realizing I’d been laying in sand. I looked around me and I also realized I was surrounded by water. I’m all alone, nobody’s here, it’s just me alone.

I thought, “I’m dreaming. I’m dreaming. I’m dreaming.”

I pinched my self about a few hundred times until I was light red in the spot I’d pinched. I began to cry thinking if I’ll ever be able to go to college, say sorry to my mom, or even see my room again. I looked down to hear and see that my tears were landing on a small box, about the size of my palm. I stopped crying and wiped my face then, I wiped the box off and it read “Matches” on the top of the box. I picked it up and it seemed, by the weight, that it was full. I opened it and saw that they were the exact ones I had in my pocket. I then realized if I wanted to survive this retched place these had to be my priorities: water, food, shelter, and fire. I got up and began walking to the water surrounding the island hoping it was fresh. I knelt down and cupped some water in my hands, just like survivalist TV show actors did. I prayed that it was fresh, then I put it up to my mouth and spit it right back out.

I yelled because no one could hear me, “Why me?”

No one answered, but I already knew the outcome of my scream. I kept walking the coast of the island to see if I could find another water source, and sure enough after a few hours I did.

I came up to the river and kept walking along it. As I walked along it I found a gallon jug and thought it would be useful to hold the water in after I get farther down the river. I also found a large stick I thought I could use it for hunting (Yeah I watch a to much survival TV shows). Then, a few minutes later there was clear water that looked clean enough to drink. So, I filled up the gallon jug and walked North, still walking by the river. Later down the river, I found a whole school of fish so I used my amazing hunting skills and tried to stab one of the fish. I failed. So, I tried again with the one fish that wouldn’t go away. It was a beautiful fish actually, it’s scales reflected light off to make it seem the fish was rainbow, it’s eyes seemed to be rainbow too. I stared at it for a little and then decided I was too hungry to not kill it. So, the fish stayed there, right in place, as I stabbed it with my stick. It wasn’t as bloody as I thought it would be so I just kept stabbing more that got stuck on the waterfall ledge. I figured I could eat them raw so I ate the two fish that I caught, and at the moment it didn’t hurt my stomach at all. Next, I headed off North following the river.

A few minutes later as I was walking, I saw a big forest to the right(East) of me. It was dense and I could only see darkness as I looked at it even though it was the middle of the day, I could smell the pine of the trees, I could hear the cicadas and birds making so much noise as I got closer to the woods. I figured I could find some shelter, and some firewood. So, I started heading into the woods. When I got even closer I was even more scared, then I saw a sign that looked pretty decayed, but I could make out some of the words.

“ Libero Forest,” I read out loud. “Hm, I wonder what that means.”

I began entering the woods, scared as ever. I remembered I needed to collect fire wood, so having trees all around me I tried to get some branches. But, I couldn’t reach any branches of the trees, as I was only 5’ 4” which was pretty short for nine-teen. The trees were tall as well though. I kept walking through the woods, and I couldn’t tell which direction I was going because the sun was no where to be seen, it seemed I’d been walking there late at night. Then, I ran right into a small tree-I could tell it was small because the trunk of it was skinny. When I ran into it I snapped one of the branches off. I felt around the ground to find it and I didn’t succeed. But, the matches in my pocket fell out onto the ground.

I then said in realization, “Oh the matches, I could use those to light up the place a bit. I’ll just have to be careful not to burn down the whole forest.”

So, I lit one of the matches up and I could see the place a little better, but not much, as matches did not produce a lot of light. So, I held the match in my left hand and felt the ground with my right hand. The mud went in between my fingers and it felt so weird. But, I eventually found the stick and picked it up.

“Found one!” I said in excitement.

It wasn’t a big achievement but I still was really happy. So, I kept moving on and found so more sticks with the match in my hand. As I was was walking out, I found some bananas on the tree above me, luckily I could reach them if I couldn’t I don’t know what I would do.

“Alright, three down 1 to go,” I said.

When I got out of the forest I realized I’d gotten out pretty close to where I had gotten in, so I began following the river again. To my surprise, there was a volcano ahead of me. It was so tall, but it looked like it wasn’t erupting anytime soon, so I began walking towards it and thought I could find shelter on the volcano.

When I was finally a few more miles away I noticed a cave that looked dark but had a big opening in which I could stay. So, without even thinking about what was laying inside, I put all my stuff down in the cave, it had a rough floor so I didn’t know if I would be able to get a good night’s rest, but it was better than nothing. As soon as I got into the cave and placed my stuff down it began to rain, so I put my stuff deeper in the cave so it wouldn’t get wet. I placed down my fire wood and put made a fire. At that moment I felt at home, with a warm fire heating my feet. I ate the bananas I found and drank some water, and I felt so much better after that.

So, this is where I am right now I’m relaxing in this cave and I haven’t found any wild animals in it yet, so I think I’m safe. But, I’m just glad I found everything I needed. I’m pretty proud of myself, not gonna lie. But, now I just get to relax. So,

Good night, diary. I’ll write in you tomorrow.
