“STOP! THIEF!”
Running through the heavy crowd, the boy turned to see three guards pursuing him. Though their height and long legs were obvious advantages for them, the boy was nimble and quick, and weaved between patrons with ease. His view was mainly of legs and skirts, and the occasional wheel as he dodged out of the way of a heavy-laden cart.
Heart racing, he tore around the corner and skidded across the dusty ground. His legs slipped from under him; too soon his body came crashing down.
Feet trampled over him. Hands grabbed him from behind, harshly pulling him up by the scruff of his neck.
“I’m sorry!” shouted the boy, eyes wide with fear, staring into the face of a large, angry man. “We were hungry!”
The man tore a small bag from his frail arms and looked inside. Three bread rolls, burned.
His face softened. He handed the bag back. “Don’t do it again.”
The boy nodded, brushed dirt off his torso, and took off again, clutching the bag closely.
As he rounded the corner, he stopped and opened the satchel.
Hidden, deep inside the bread, a diamond ring.
