Every muscle burning, every breath measured

Kraai didn’t move.

He stood rooted to the spot as if his feet had fused into the packed earth beneath him, ignoring the call to leave as though it had drifted past his ears without registering. His onyx hair, spiky at the crown but falling thick and straight down to his shoulder blades, was matted and damp with sweat, strands sticking to his neck and forehead, glistening faintly in the golden light of the late afternoon sun. Droplets rolled slowly down the sides of his face, tracing thin, dark lines through the dust and grime of hours of practice before dripping steadily onto the ground at his feet.

His skin was a warm, deep bronze tone, just a shade darker than that of his companion, subtle enough that it might be overlooked in ordinary light, but distinct enough to notice clearly when they stood side by side, catching the rays of the setting sun. It spoke of long days spent training outdoors, exposed to wind and sun, marked by faint old scars along his forearms and the back of his hands, each one a quiet testament to the lessons he had learned through trial and error.

He wore his standard black training gear: a sleeveless shirt that left his arms and shoulders fully exposed, showing the definition of muscles built through years of discipline, and loose, sturdy trousers that allowed for a full range of movement, gathered neatly at the calves and tucked into high, reinforced leather boots caked with dirt and scuffed at the toes. The fabric of his clothes was soaked through in places, clinging heavily to his lean, athletic frame, outlining the steady rise and fall of his chest as he fought to bring his breathing back under control.

In his right hand, he gripped his wooden staff tall, smooth, and polished from years of use holding it firmly in both hands now, its lower end resting solidly on the ground. His fingers were wrapped tight around its length, knuckles white, as if the simple weapon was the only anchor keeping him upright. Every part of his body screamed for rest; his legs trembled almost imperceptibly, his shoulders ached deep into the bone, and his arms felt heavy as lead. Yet he refused to let go, refused to lower his guard even for a moment. To him, the staff was more than just a tool for practice; it was an extension of himself, a source of balance, strength, and focus, and without it, he felt as though he might simply collapse under the weight of his own fatigue.

His dark eyes remained fixed on the space before him, the same spot where he had been striking, blocking, and shifting for hours. Even now, his mind was still moving, still replaying each sequence of moves, correcting the smallest errors, refining his stance, searching for the perfect flow that would turn effort into instinct. The exhaustion was there, heavy and unrelenting, but it was overshadowed by a fierce, unyielding determination. He would not leave until he felt he had truly mastered the moment, until every motion felt as natural as breathing itself.

Only after a long, drawn-out breath, and another, did his grip on the staff finally loosen just a little, his knuckles regaining their color. But still, he did not turn, did not step forward, did not give any sign that he was ready to follow. He stood there, a silent, imposing figure in the fading light, exhausted, yes, but far from defeated.
