The night sky glitters around him, as Moon drifts in and out of consciousness. His tired eyes fall prey to heavy lids, waiting for sleep to take over. Suddenly, a vibrant light flashes before his lids, and his tired orbs open wide to see the most brilliant sight surrounded by a soft glow of light.

“Star!” He calls to her, trying not to let the words get caught on his tongue. It falls on deaf ears. She doesn’t even stir. “Star!” He calls again trying to follow her, but unable to move.

She glances back, with a soft smile on her lips. His heart pounds so loudly in his chest, that he can’t hear the words that form on her lips. Slowly, she twists back around before fading into the dark of night. All that’s left is her soft glow.

*

Moon waits each night, on the brink of exhaustion, to meet Star as she passes by. Her smile lifts the broken spirit in his heart. Her light brings life back to his eyes. Her laugh tugs at the corners of his mouth to form a smile.

Soon Star passes by slower, lingering by Moon. In orbit with one another, they stay close together in the fleeting hours of the night.

For Star, Moon helps her shine brighter. Her soft glow turns into a vibrant light whenever he was around. A kaleidoscope of colors reflects off her skin, casting a rainbow of colors around them. The air fills with shimmering violets, silvery blue hues, and soft pinks.

Those are the most beautiful nights.

*

Moon sits on his heels. He no longer looks with tired eyes, excitement fills their once dull hue. They’ll soon shimmer with Star’s vibrancy.

He waits, twiddling his thumbs and rocking back and forth on his feet. The night's unnaturally dark like the lights had been turned off.

As the night fades into the stormy grey of the morning, Moon stands. His chest clenching in panic.

“Star!” He calls into the sky around him.

He twists around, straining his eyes to find her glow. It never comes.

“Star!”

As nights pass, the hole in his chest grows and his once luminous glow fades with each passing sunrise.

Star and her light stop passing by.

*

The kaleidoscope of colors begins to fade from Moon’s eyes, as the sound of her laugh leaves his ears, and the memory of her rests heavily in his heart. Star's the only person who ever belonged there.

The next night's rain pitter-patters around him, soaking him to the core and mixing with the tears on his cheeks. No light shines around his dull glow.

No matter how hard he tries he can’t forget Star.

Moon decides he won't.

*

Star was always the one wandering. Moon, hopeful, began to wander himself in hopes of finding her.

Moon shifts from place to place. He sees the tiny little stars twinkle off the Eiffel Tower, the freckled city lights of New York City, the different ship lights drifting across the sea. None of them are as warming as hers, none of them shine as brightly, but each leaves an aching memory in his mind.

*

Moon collapses in exhaustion in the spot where he began. The night sky glitters around him. He drifts in and out of consciousness, his eyes falling prey to heavy lids. He waits for that vibrant light to shock him back to life, but sleep takes over him.

Moon dreams of Star’s glow as it passes by him. He dreams of her name on his lips. He dreams of her eyes twinkling with flecks of gold and silver. He dreams of her laugh swelling in his chest and bringing a smile to his lips. He dreams of her kaleidoscope of colors.

“Star…” He says on a tired breath. “I will wait for you.”
