Sound That Outlasted the Noise
The World Cracked Alongside the Truth
Glass shattered.
It started high above the street, the long bank of office windows along the avenue, gleaming golden in the afternoon sun, one moment smooth and perfect, the next splitting open with a sharp, startling crack that cut through the crowd’s roar like a whip. Before anyone could react, the web of fractures spread, racing across pane after pane, until suddenly they gave way, entirely bursting outward in a glittering shower of fine, silver shards that rained down onto the pavement. The sound was everywhere at once: the sharp, brittle tinkle of small pieces, the heavier clatter of larger fragments, the distant snap of something high up giving way completely. Down at street level, the café display windows followed, then the glass panels at the bus stop, then the shopfronts lining the narrow lane, all of them splitting, then spilling their contents onto the road.
I threw my arms over my face and ducked, my sneakers crunching instantly on fragments that glinted like crushed diamond beneath my feet. Around me, people gasped and flinched, grabbing for each other, shielding children, stepping back against walls. A woman cried out sharply as a shard grazed her arm. A little boy reached down to pick up a sparkling piece and was pulled back by his mother before he could cut his fingers. For a heartbeat, the whole city seemed to hold its breath as if the bright, shining face we all knew had just cracked open, and something darker was showing through.
Then Blaze spoke. His voice boomed out, loud and commanding, riding above the falling glass. “Stay back! The danger is contained! Remain exactly where you are we have everything under control!”
The crowd exhaled. They nodded, reassured. It’s from the fight, they said to one another. The villain’s blasts. The shockwaves. It’s just collateral damage. Better glass than us. I wanted to believe it too. I wanted to tell myself that broken things were just the price of being protected, that when you stand against great harm, some fragile things are bound to fall.
But then I looked up.
I saw Blaze standing clear of the rubble, his hands still glowing with intense, rolling heat. There was no enemy in sight. No incoming blast. No explosion from below. The glass hadn’t been shattered by someone else’s attack. It had been shattered by the sheer, overwhelming force of his presence, the radiating heat, the shifting pressure, the raw power pouring off him so fiercely that it had pushed outward until every smooth, clear surface in its path simply could not hold on anymore.
He didn’t glance up at the broken windows. He didn’t flinch. He didn’t even seem to notice.
That was when he turned his back to the cheering crowd, lowered his voice, and gave the order that would change everything.
“Eliminate the rest,” he said, cold and sharp as the shards at my feet. “No prisoners. No witnesses.”
I stood frozen, the words cutting through the noise clearer than any breaking glass. I looked to Frost, and she nodded. To Singa, his skin hardened into gleaming steel. To Nightveil and he stepped silently into the shadows. To Kounter, he raised his arms, erecting an invisible barrier across the mouth of the alley, sealing the terrified, surrendered men inside where no one could see.
All around me, people were still cheering. They were brushing glass dust from their sleeves, checking their phones, laughing in relief. The broken glass was just part of the excitement the thrilling, dramatic aftermath of a great victory. No one looked closely enough to see where the damage came from. No one asked why the windows had broken from the heat of the hero, not the rage of the villain.
I stayed there a long time after the crowd began to drift away, staring at the glittering mess strewn across the road. Cleanup crews arrived, sweeping it into piles, brushing it into dustpans, shovelling it away as if it had never been there at all. But I kept seeing it catching the light, sharp and bright, scattered across the pavement like stars fallen from the sky.
That night, I walked home slowly, my path winding past shopfronts already boarded up, the glass already gone, already being covered over. I realized then that it wasn’t just windows that had broken today. It was the clear, bright view I’d always held of them the perfect, untouchable heroes standing in the light, keeping us safe. Now I saw the cracks running through everything. Now I knew that the same power that can shine so beautifully can also be the thing that shatters the world if the hands holding it choose to turn it the wrong way.
Glass shattered. And when it did, it showed me what lay behind the shine.
