Someone Is Living in My Attic

The house was cheaper than it should’ve been.

That should’ve been the first red flag.

But Daniel Reeves wasn’t in a position to question luck. Fresh start, new job, new town—he needed something affordable, fast.

And the place looked perfect.

Small.

Quiet.

Just outside the main stretch of Birmingham.

The first night was peaceful.

Too peaceful.

By the third night, he noticed the footsteps.

Soft.

Slow.

Above him.

Daniel lay in bed, staring at the ceiling.

“…Probably the house settling,” he muttered.

Old houses made noise.

Everyone knew that.

Still—

It sounded like pacing.

Back and forth.

Back and forth.

It stopped the moment he got up.

The next morning, his milk was missing.

Not gone.

Just… less.

Daniel frowned, holding the carton up.

“I didn’t drink this much…”

He lived alone.

No roommates.

No pets.

He shrugged it off.

Until it kept happening.

Food disappearing.

Trash moved.

Cabinets were left slightly open when he knew he’d closed them.

And always—

Every night—

Those footsteps.

Slower now.

More deliberate.

Like they knew he was listening.

A week passed before he checked the attic.

He stood beneath the pull-down ladder, staring up at the hatch.

The footsteps had been louder the night before.

Closer.

“Raccoon,” he whispered.

“Has to be.”

He grabbed a flashlight.

Pulled the cord.

The ladder creaked down.

The air that spilled out was—

Wrong.

Warm.

Stale.

Like something had been breathing up there.

Daniel hesitated.

Then climbed.

Each step groaned under his weight.

The attic was dark.

Thick with dust.

He flicked on the flashlight.

Boxes.

Old insulation.

Nothing unusual.

He exhaled.

“See? Nothing—”

The beam shifted.

And stopped.

There was a mattress.

Not old.

Not forgotten.

Used.

Blankets were tangled on top of it.

A dent in the center.

Fresh.

Daniel’s stomach dropped.

“No…”

Next to it—

A small pile.

Food wrappers.

Empty cans.

His brand.

His breath hitched.

“…No.”

Then he saw the photos.

They were scattered across the floor.

Dozens.

All of him.

Sleeping.

In his bed.

On his couch.

At his kitchen table.

Takes from above.

From corners.

From angles that didn’t exist unless—

Unless someone had been standing over him.

Watching.

Living above him.

His hands shook as he turned one over.

A date was written on the back.

Yesterday.

The flashlight trembled as he moved further in.

There was a calendar pinned to a wooden beam.

Each day marked.

Not with notes—

But with time.

6:10 a.m. – wakes (turns left first), 7:32 a.m. – leaves (forgets keys sometimes), 10:47 p.m. – checks phone before sleep

Future dates were filled too.

Predictions.

Or plans.

And then—

The shrine.

Tucked into the far corner.

Daniel didn’t want to look.

He did anyway.

Photos of him.

Smiling.

Sleeping.

Unaware.

Surrounded by—

Clippings.

Toenails.

Strands of his hair.

Carefully arranged.

Worshipped.

A small note sat in the center.

Mine.

Daniel stumbled backward, nearly falling through the attic entrance.

He didn’t pack.

Didn’t think.

Didn’t breathe.

He called the police.

They searched everything.

Attic.

Walls.

Basement.

Crawl spaces.

Nothing.

No mattress.

No photos.

No shrine.

No sign anyone had ever been there.

“You sure you didn’t imagine it?” one officer asked.

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because he knew what he saw.

He didn’t sleep that night.

Or the next.

But exhaustion always wins.

At some point—

He drifted.

Just for a second.

When he woke up—

There was something on his pillow.

A letter.

Folded neatly.

Dark.

Sticky.

Daniel’s hands shook as he opened it.

The smell hit first.

Metallic.

Blood.

The writing was uneven.

Jagged.

Like it had been carved rather than written.

You looked for me.

Daniel froze.

I didn’t like that.

His chest tightened.

But it’s okay.

The words smeared slightly under his fingers.

Still wet.

You’ll learn.

A drop slid down the page.

You’re not alone anymore.

His breath caught.

You were never alone.

The last line was larger.

Messier.

Desperate.

I LOVE YOU.

Something creaked above him.

Daniel didn’t look.

He left the next morning.

No bags.

No furniture.

No goodbye.

Just his car.

And the clothes on his back.

The house sat empty after that.

For months.

Until someone new bought it.

Cheap.

Quiet.

Perfect.

And sometimes—

Late at night—

If you stand very still—

You can hear it.

Soft.

Slow.

Footsteps.

Back and forth.

Back and forth.

Because some people don’t break in.

They were already there.
