It was a record hot summer that year
Seemed everyday was a hundred or more
The sun would rise blazing in a sky crystal clear
A little warmer than the day before
The Fourth of July was just around the corner
We were planning the hottest events
And when we thought that it could not get warmer
The meteorologist increased the temps
The air units were humming like seven forty sevens
Every brow carried pools of sweat
We were unknowingly baking in mother nature’s oven
“Relief is coming,” they said, “just not yet”
So one by one we split up, as an army divided
To hit up every store we could find
When desperation and desire collided
An idea arose just in time
A couple hundred kiddy pools soon lined the front yard
Filled to the top with priceless, bagged gold
Penguins and polar bears would have found it hard
To find a better way to bring on the cold
I poured myself a double, any beverage would do
With the chillest ice, packed to the top
And then, in shock, coughed it out, you would too
When frosty emerged from my red solo cup
He called out, “happy birthday,” then he laughed in my face
Grabbed my ice and then, ran off, out of sight
There were frosties popping up all over the place
We stood staring not believing our eyes
The next thing I remember, I woke up in a bed
The whole neighborhood in hospital gowns
All telling the same story, as they increased our meds
About the time that frosty came to our town
I don’t know if it was the heat
Or if we were living a lie
But I have no doubt it was frosty
Chilling with me, on the Fourth of July
